So, I just wanted to take a minute to share a story about about something that happened to me yesterday - It's about true generosity and the wonderful kind of people in the world.
For those of you who don't know, on Tuesday morning I got into a car accident on my way to work, and my car was totaled. Everyone is okay, I've been a little sore the past few days, but thankfully nobody got hurt. Unfortunately, my car is beyond repair ... which is pretty crappy - and awful timing, because also, for those of you who don't know ... I was supposed to be leaving Georgia and moving back to Connecticut this weekend.
Obviously, plans have changed. I don't have a car to move home with, and I don't have a car to get to work with at home, should I manage to get back there; or a car to get to work with if I stay down here! I have to appear in court on the 24th of January, which is also pretty inconvenient to the moving home plan. And I'm poor, so I didn't have any money to buy a plane ticket home for the holidays. The train was sold out, and the bus was too expensive and took two days.
Basically ... life sucked.
Tuesday night, I got a phone call from the people I work for, informing me that they had a car for me to use for as long as I'm down here. It was Rachel's old car from when she was a teenager, and old '91 BMW, and it's been sitting at Jeff's parents house for years, not really being used. They'd been fixing it up, but Jeff's dad called the shop and asked them to hurry up on putting the new speedometer in so that it would be driveable by Wednesday morning. So I got a ride to work on Wed morning, and Jeff's parents came down about halfway through the day and dropped the car off. It's not in any condition to make it to Connecticut, but it's certainly good for around here and getting to work and back. That was the first amazingly generous thing that happened to me.
Also, since Jeff and Rachel are amazing people, they extended an invitation to me to come to their family Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. They said that if I couldn't find a way to make it home for Christmas, they'd love it if I would join them. I thought that was terribly sweet of them. They've really treated me so well over the past 6 months. Like one of the family.
Rachel also looked up airfare for me and searched for the cheapest round trip ticket she could find, and found one for 288 bucks. By the time I got to look it up, it was 328 bucks, but still the cheapest around. It was nice of her to look for me. I still didn't know how I was going to afford it though, and was starting to deal with the fact that I wasn't going to be able to be with my family on Christmas, which had me in a real tizzy.
The second amazing thing that happened to me was on Wednesday night. I was out walking around the mall, and happend to run into my cousins who were out shopping. Pretty random, I actually thought they were both at work, lol. But so I tagged along with them for a little while, and at one point, we're at the check out at one store, and Danielle turns to me and hands me a hundred dollar bill. I laughed at her, but then she told me she was serious and that it was my Christmas present. She told me to take it, and use it to go home for Christmas so I could be with my family and get happy. She said she'd been thinking about it for the last hour and a half and decided that I needed it more than she did and she wanted me to have it.
I was floored. Never in my life would I have thought she'd do something like that. I wanted to cry.
So I deposited it in the bank, went home, and ordered a plane ticket. My flight gets into Bradley at 930 on Saturday morning, and I will be there until noon-ish on the 1st of January.
Anyways ... the THIRD amazing thing that happened to me was last night. I was shopping at the dollar store, buying wrapping paper and other junk that I needed for today. I get in line, and the woman rang up my items and it came to like 13 dollars or something, and then as I'm reaching into my purse for my wallet, the guy behind me says to the cashier, "Here, ring my items in with hers and I'll cover us both."
I was floored. I didn't even know what to say. I asked him if he was crazy and he said he wanted to do it and that everyone at his church was trying to do this random act of kindness thing for somebody they didn't know. It was amazing. So he paid for my entire order of stuff, wished me a merry christmas, and went on his way.
Unbelievable. I've done random acts of kindness before, but never anything like that! And I've never been on the recieving end of one. It made me feel so special, and like someone was truly looking out for me. This guy didn't even know my situation, and had no idea how much I needed that. Amazing. That's the true spirit of the season. It reminded me how much I have to be thankful for, and how I need to do my part somehow.
So this morning, I paid for the coffee of the guy who was in line behind me in the drive-thru. It was simple, but it made me feel good.
So the next amazing thing that happened was this morning when I got to work, and Rachel, Jeff, Tyler and I did the whole gift exchange thing. I gave Ty all of the toys and books and stuff I had bought him and he loved them all which was so awesome ... and then Rachel and Jeff gave me a card with 150 bucks inside. Because they're out of their minds and crazy. She said she didn't get time to go to the store to get me the gift she wanted to give me, but that she hoped I could use the money instead, even if it was just to help pay for an airline ticket to get home. Unbelievable. I am so grateful, I don't even know how to thank them really. They are wonderful people. Despite the sadness factor of not being able to move home right away, I am actually looking forward to coming back to Georgia and getting to spend at least another month with Tyler.
Merry Christmas everyone. I'm glad I have so much to be thankful for at such a crappy and low point in my life.
