Firstly, I want to say HOMG, I'm so jealous that you're taking a human sexuality class. It's one of those classes I really wanted to take when I was in college but wasn't offered when I had the free room.
Secondly, I cannot stand how big of prudes we are. How can you have ads, commercials and shit everywhere that basically screams sex, but then have issues openly TALKING about it? It's so hypocritical. We've only been having sex for thousands of years now; isn't it time we got over to it. And don't get me started on the whole Abstinence-only education bullshit we have going on too. How the hell does anyone begin to think that's a good idea? "Let's just tell people they can't do it, they'll listen!" Yeah, but kids never listen when you tell them "DON'T DO IT", so when they go to do it, what happens? Making kids scare of sex and their own bodies is just wrong; even if you stop a dozen kids from having sex until they're married, who's to say you haven't scarred them for life?
Sorry, if you can't tell, this is a hot button topic for me.
I'm really excited about it. Plus I'm taking it with one of my BFFs, which makes it even better lol.
I totally agree. The hypocrisy of it really pisses me off. What pisses me off even more about the whole thing is the idea that it's ok for men to be sexual beings, but if women are they're labeled as whores or sluts. It really upsets me when people are like, "We don't need feminism any more; women have equal rights," yet women are still treated like sexual objects, are still made to feel bad if they are sexual, and are still paid less for the same jobs as men. /End feminist rant.
Teaching only abstinence is so stupid. I don't think politicians realize that teenagers are (usually) competent human beings, and they're going to make their own personal decisions no matter what. We should be teaching about safe sex and about STDs, not abstinence.
