So I went outside for a smoke, and there climbing into the dumpster beside my apartment was a possum. This dumpster is the food provider for a group of feral cats that live in the bushes nearby. My first thought was, "I wonder who would win in a fight?" Then I realized, hey, it's a dumpster, there's plenty of garbage, they would probably just hiss at each other some and then stick to opposite sides or one would run off. When there's plenty, animals tend to leave each other alone rather than risking an injury.
So, why aren't we like that? Why are we in the middle of a war, with both sides killing and brutalizing each other senselessly? Well, because there are two resources that there just aren't enough of anymore, land and oil.
The sad part, if we could look a little further for solutions, we'd realize that we don't desperately need either one of those resources... There are numerous energy resources that we could be harnessing which are incredibly abundant, and lots of alternatives to squabbling over territory for our growing populations (such as decreasing pop. growth, colonizing the oceans (we have the engineering to make artificial islands) and eventually, it's a big big starry sky with lots of barren rocks to turn into peopled worlds).
Anyways, it's late and I'm rambly, but I thought I'd jot this down before I went to bed.
