Today was a five-stop day. First I went to UPS to drop off two boxes of merchandise being returned and two big trash sacks full of plastic packing peanuts for reuse. Then I drove by the bank, but there were nine cars in the drive-through lanes so I punted that for later. Then I went to the local plant nursery to drop off some Toys for Tots stuff and incidentally check out their Christmas shop. They had Erzgebirge schwiboggen, lighted carved arches with Christmas scenes, but for today I didn't buy any. They didn't have Christmas tree candles, so I'll go to another place that has had them in the past sometime soon. Then it was off to Petsmart. We try to keep a few weeks' supply of kitty litter in the garage in winter in case we get iced in (we live at the bottom of a hill and sometimes can't get out). I bought five bags of litter and two catnip mice like Tora's current favorite; they have microchips in them and chirp when they're batted. Toys with microchips are likely to wear out quickly and they were on sale.
Safeway was next, a big shopping trip that included a large turkey that will become frozen cooked meat for meals throughout the winter. I also bought enough walnuts on sale to get me through a winter's baking; Karl chops the nuts with our onion chopper, which is a big help to me. On the way home I stopped at the bank and completed Karl's business banking; the joys of being one of his assistants.
I went on line for a bit while resting up for phase two: inventory and load in the car the Toys for Tots stuff from my mom (she bought a bunch of stuff on clearance and I took it from her to make sure it got donated) and the pile of stuff going to the thrift store. I'll take those in tomorrow after the maids clean the house, including the area where all the stuff was.
Karl had dinner with a business friend, so Lydia and I ate ramen and other assorted stuff. I watched football until the score got too lopsided to be interesting and then read part of the Sunday paper. Karl came home and we watched more of the game, which got even more lopsided. We were rewarded with the sight of a Green Bay Packers fan wearing a "cheese" top hat and a green and yellow cutaway coat. And we ate ice cream.
Then we changed Tora's dressing. She now has a row of staples in place of the stitches on her side and two open wounds where the surgical drains were. Over the weekend she had a growth spurt that seems to have included her wounds because the drain sites were noticably smaller and the incision looks much better. I put generic Neosporin on the wounds, then a gauze pad, and then wrapped her around the middle with an Ace bandage secured with bandage tape. Tora then got her reward: stretching out on Karl, her favorite person, and getting petted without the Elizabethan collar. She has at least another week in the collar and will get her staples out in a week. It's hard to admit it, but she's still not out of the woods. Fortunately she seems to finally be headed in the right direction.
Now I can't sleep, even though I've been cutting down on caffeine. So here I am, banging out the sort of entry that won't get commented on but that will be fun to look back on someday as an ordinary day in my life ca. 2011.
