Solo Dad Saturday

Area wife is out of the area for a wedding, so parenting falls to me. Luckily, my Mom came up for the weekend for a visit, so we can divide and conquer the two kids when need be.

Daughter 1 (2.75 yo) and I went out to a nearby park for a children's program hosted by someone who goes by the name "Pirate Jack". He was actually pretty funny, but the music ran more to normal fare than to more authentic sea shanties (see Dan Zanes' "Sea Music" for how the more authentic stuff can work for kids -- you even get an 11 year old singing "All for Me Grog"). Then she got some run-around time at the park.

Then it was back home for lunch and naps. I went back out to the grocery store and got inspired for dinner by the huge bin of local sweet corn for pennies an ear. I am pleased to say Daughter 1 ate an entire ear of it, plus all her pesto pasta with mushrooms, for dinner. She also had a good bit of time at the pool , though, so she may have just been famished.

Daughter 2 (5.5 months old) is being a huge chowhound, going through milk like it's in danger of rationing. Could be a growth spurt. She also tried to eat some of her sister's yogurt, which suggests to me that it's time to start trying some semi-solid foods.

My mom has offered to hold down the fort if I want to go see a movie, or something, but all the stuff that I'd really like to have seen back when normal people saw them have moved on. There's one screen of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in the greater DC area, it seems, and its last show has already shown this evening.

Tomorrow morning, it's to church for everyone for the Blessing of the Animals (or, "We... don't really know what's going to happen, but there should be some dogs!"), and out to Eggspectation for the weekly brunch ritual. Then, naps should follow, and maybe some more pool time.
