Before the Storm

"Now what? More strange aliens? Weird adventures with River? Some other old friend?" Amy asked before adding, "No more museum planets. In fact, no more museums."

"I second that," Rory added, looking at the blue stabilizers. Amy wanted something exciting, but perhaps not life-threatening. The Doctor had a knack for getting into trouble. He drummed his fingers on the console and fingered his screwdriver when something beeped. Amy followed him to a monitor with a moving dot and words that went too fast for her to catch.

"Good news," the Doctor spoke and started pressing things, "There's a ship that's crashing."

"And that's good news?" Rory asked and crossed his arms.

"We're going to chase it," he announced with that smile like a boy who was planning mischief. She started to smile as well and they did as he told them.

"I think you might want to change your wardrobe," he suggested upon landing.

"And why's that?" she asked of her black skirt and red shirt. The Doctor opened his mouth and closed it.

"Or we can say we've been in Holland," he said, "and you'll need these." He opened up a panel and tossed them cloth bags. Then, he opened the door. She ran after him and Rory took her hand. They shared a glance. It was still amazing that they were even here. This honeymoon was so better than Majorca. Unfortunately, there was the smell of fuel burning and wreckage lay in front of them. Another stench filled the air as well and she grabbed onto Rory's hand. She doubted anyone survived. The Doctor pointed his sonic screwdriver and yelled, "Catch them!"

It was no use to ask questions and small, furry orange balls started popping out of the holes in the spaceship. They were tricky buggers. Some of them escaped before they sorted out how to do it. The Doctor turned back to them with his hands in his pockets. The important thing was to play cool and not admit...

"Five of them got past us," Rory blurted before the Doctor could say anything. Amy closed her eyes for a moment.

"What? This is Eighteenth century Earth, they would infest the whole planet in a week," the Doctor spoke, "We have to get them all."
"Why? You haven't even explained what these things are," Amy said, having to tie the bag tighter as the creatures struggled against it.

"Iotans are pests, cute but pests none the less. They're practically born pregnant," he described and started walking towards the Tardis.

"If I didn't know better, they sound like Tribbles," Rory commented while hefting his own sack.

"So, that's what he went with," the Doctor spoke and the door opened, "told him he shouldn't use the real name." Tribbles sounded familiar.

"Is this one of your Star Trek things?" Amy asked.

"You knew Gene Roddenberry?" Rory questioned at almost the same time.

"Gene was a companion of mine once, a long time ago before Susan was born..." the Doctor started before seeming to realize who was with him. He was silent as he took out a sort of travel playpen and soniced it. She thought about all the times he had helped children, including her. Had he been a father? Why did the Tardis have a playpen?

"Who's Susan?" Amy asked in case she received a real response.

"We'll keep them here," the Doctor said and reached for a bag. She hesitated, but he pretended not to have heard her. The Iotans were dumped inside where it did seem like there were more than they had caught just minutes ago. He used the Sonic Screwdriver on the playpen again and took out his mobile. They followed him outside and he pointed the mobile around, pressing buttons.

"We have five Iotans that we need to find before someone finds one or we have more than five," the Doctor spoke, "This way."

They walked through the hot, humid jungle. Amy was glad for the short skirt and wished she'd gone with a different top. Then, she noticed the two men in front of them wearing red coats, like the British military used to do. Oh, he wasn't kidding about Eighteenth century Earth. One of the colonies maybe?

"Halt! Who you be?" asked the first man.

"John Smith, a merchant trader, came up on the other side of the island. These two are part of my crew," the Doctor said and held up that psychic paper of his. The younger one kept staring at Amy until the other one elbowed him.

"Ah, well, we have a perfectly good port here," said the first man, "unless you were trying to get around paying..."

"No, I assure you, just got turned around a bit, is there someone in charge here at this port...Port..."

"Royal, Port Royal, must have been some storm," the solder commented.

"Yes, yes, it was, now who's in charge here in Port Royal?" the Doctor asked, putting away his paper.

"The Governor is Weatherby Swann but we answer to Captain Norrington..."

"Soon to be Commodore," the younger one piped up.

"We don't know that for sure," the first soldier said with annoyance.

"Everyone know that the Governor visited Mister Brown's shop two weeks ago ordering a sword and the Interceptor is due any day now," the second one retorted, "it's a reasonable assumption. Who do you think he's ordering for? Miss Swann?"

They both laughed and Amy frowned. She was beginning to dislike this place. They didn't think girls should even have swords.

"Right, well, I think we will going now, but if we need assistance, we'll know who to call," the Doctor spoke and pat the first on the shoulder.

"I think I have a lead again on one of them," he said and pointed to the right. They were stared at as they walked through the town, arriving at a fort.

"It's at the fort?" she asked as Rory studied the soldiers at the entrance.

"So much more modern than what we had," he muttered under his breath.

"Yes, I might even know exactly where," the Doctor said with a smile and walked up to the guards.

"We'd like to speak with Captain Norrington," the Doctor spoke and after a moment of consternation, they nodded. They were led through the stone labyrinth with Rory keeping an arm around her. Finally, they arrived at an office, or at the eighteenth century equivalent. The soldier was dismissed and the Doctor held out his psychic paper.

"Captain Norrington? I'm John Smith, this is Amy Pond and Rory Williams," he said and Amy couldn't help a smile. Last time, he'd introduced Rory as Rory Pond. Her husband wasn't so pleased.

"And what's your business here?" asked the man who despite the white wig didn't seem that old. She wondered if he was even thirty. She smirked at how he avoided looking at her.

"I'm a trader with a ship. Unfortunately, some of my cargo got loose. They're animals, so big," he described and held his hands apart, "and they happen to be orange. Seen one?"

"Yes, I have, in fact," Norrington admitted and walked to a corner of the office where there was a metal cage. Inside the cage was an Iotan.

"I thought it would make an excellent gift, some sort of rabbit," he said added in a softer voice, "perhaps for someone of the female persuasion."

"Someone has a girlfriend," Amy whispered in Rory's ear.

"I'm going to need that animal," the Doctor said and Norrington handed it over, "You could try flowers or jewelry or...how about a book? A thrilling book of tales on the high seas?"

The captain's green eyes were deep in thought and he finally nodded.

"That might work," Norrington spoke, "but did Miss Pond not finish dressing?"

"Mrs. Pond has finished dressing," she stated, "This is the height of fashion in...Holland."

"Holland," Norrington repeated in an unbelieving way, "Well, mam, this is Port Royal. Our citizens are not accustomed to such undress. We do have a shop where you could procure items."

"But..." Amy started because no one told her what to do. Then, Rory leaned over.

"I think you'd look cute in it," he whispered and she couldn't refuse him; not when he had that puppy dog look.

"Where is this shop?" she asked and Norrington picked up his hat.

"I'll take you there myself and offer my coat in the meantime," he said and took off his large coat.

"Umm, okay," she agreed since it was a nice gesture. He was trying to be a gentleman. It was so large that it nearly dragged along on the ground as she walked. He spoke to the woman inside, took back his coat and left them.

Half an hour later with a few alterations, the three of them walked out with new coats for the men and a whole new outfit for Amy. Her dress covered more of her than she thought possible and underneath was a corset. It was uncomfortable, but she did have to admit that her cleavage looked much more impressive than usual. Then, they spotted the two soldiers from earlier except the older one had the beginnings of a black eye. She knew he didn't have it earlier.

"Ah, Mr. Smith, a pleasure to see you again" he said in a sarcastic manner.

"Run into some trouble?" he asked.

"No, it was Murtogg's elbow," the other man complained, "The captain ordered us to capture any orange rabbits we came across. We spotted one, but this is all we ended up with."

"Least we tried," Murtogg pointed out.

"The captain will not be pleased with this. The worst watches will become our responsibility," the first soldier said with a sigh.

"Where is this rabbit?" the Doctor asked, "Show us."

Murtogg and Mullroy, as he was introduced, took them to the other side of town where there was a small cemetery overlooking the ocean. Rory stood close to her.

"Thirty years ago, there was a quake. They say it was so bad the bodies jumped into the ocean," Murtogg spoke and Mullroy rolled his eyes. The orange creature was easily spotted on one of the grave markers. All five ran after it which resulted in Murtogg and Mullroy crashing into each other. Rory and the Doctor were able to stuff the Iotan into the cage while Amy was holding it.

"Two down, three to go," Rory announced.

"Don't know how you did it," Mullroy said and shook his head.

"It's what we do," the Doctor replied and straightened his bowtie. They walked back to town with the two soldiers in tow when the Doctor pulled out his mobile again.

"That way," he said and pointed. They made their way through the nice section of town until they reached the fanciest home of them all.

"This must be the governor's house," the Doctor spoke as walked onto the grounds. Then, they heard screaming.

"Miss! Miss, please refrain yourself! Stop!" a woman screamed so they ran towards the sound. A young woman was standing on the ground and looking up into the tree. A teenage girl was in the branches, reaching for one of the orange creatures.

"Oh, Estelle, you worry too much," she said in a calm manner.

"If he saw you, your father would replace me!" Estelle hissed and wrung her hands.

"Come here, baby," the girl spoke in a soft manner and the Doctor began climbing the tree. How was he so good at everything? In no time, he had reached the same branch.

"Who are you?" the girl asked, full of curiosity. Were they going to pick up a new companion?

"John Smith and that animal is my responsibility," the Doctor told her, "I'd go back down now if I were you."

"Would you?"

"Well, no, not really, but Estelle appears very distressed. Is it worth getting her so upset? She seems nice enough," he said and Amy agreed. Estelle didn't appear to be a tart or something. The girl climbed down and noticed the cage.

"There's more than one! Are they from New Holland? I've read about strange creatures living there," the teenager rambled.

"Yep, it comes from very far away," she confirmed and since she was being friendly, added, "I'm Amy Pond."

"Elizabeth Swann," the girl spoke and waited as if used to a comment coming afterwards. She must be related to the governor.

"There you go, with your friends," said the Doctor, putting the Iotan with the others in the cage. Elizabeth and Estelle waved goodbye as they left for the last two puffballs. As they walked down the driveway, they saw Norrington with a small book in his hand.

"I took your suggestion to heart, Mr. Smith. I think she might like it. I also have one of those rabbits waiting for you at the fort," he spoke and looked towards Elizabeth and Estelle.

"His girlfriend must be Elizabeth," she whispered into Rory's ear and smiled. It was cute.

"Briliant," the Doctor responded and they walked down to the fort where the soldiers were eager to be rid of the strange creature although one suggested making a meal of it. Amy wondered what they tasted like, but decided not to ask the Doctor.

"One left, follow me," the Doctor spoke after a glance at his mobile.

"How can these people wear this stuff? I'm so hot," Amy complained and wished she had a fan or something.

"You get used to it," Rory uttered and she thought about his centurion outfit that he wore for a thousand years.

"There!" the Doctor exclaimed and pointed to a door with a sign, Mister Brown.

"Mister Brown?" the Doctor asked as they entered the building. It was even hotter than outside and smelled worse, too. However, there was a faint trace of alcohol wafting among the stench.

"No, Mister Brown is out this afternoon. I'm his apprentice, William Turner," said a young man, putting down the metal he was working on.

"Anything strange happen earlier? Maybe spook the mule? Like a rabbit?" the Doctor asked and William shook his head. If he had a bath, he might have been very good looking.

"No, but this sword has been taking most of my attention," he said and held up what he had been working on.

"Then you won't mind if we take a look around? It escaped from my ship. I've already discussed the matter with Captain Norrington," the Doctor spoke and Amy noticed that William glanced at the sword when Norrington's name was mentioned.

"Of course," William agreed and nodded. It could be anywhere. This place was full of hiding places.

"Here Iotan, Iotan, Iotan, where are you?" Amy called and started walking around. They took different sides of the building in their search until they met in the middle. Then, she felt something land on her head. It was wet and she touched it without thinking.

"Poo! I've got poo in my hair!" she wailed and Rory hugged her.

"Ha! You found the other one, it's up there in the rafters," the Doctor said and pointed up.

"All yours," she mumbled as the Doctor started climbing up one of the rafters.

"I'm getting too old for this," he complained. Amy and Rory smirked.

"When we're done with this, I'll run you a bath," Rory whispered.

"And get me out of this dress," Amy added and was looking forward to returning to the Tardis.

"Someone open that cage!" the Doctor cried, balanced on a wooden bean like a tightrope walker. Rory opened it up and he dropped the orange fuzzball. Rory pushed it through the door before any of the others could escape. William wasn't even watching.

"Now that's dedication, must be some sword," the Doctor commented before trying to catch his breath.

"Come on, Mr. Pond, time for that bath with bubbles and...and that green stuff that smells nice," Amy spoke and took his arm.
