Erica's cousin from Berlin kept bugging her last week to tune into the WWC matches. Finally, she relented on Sunday morning and turned on ESPN to watch what she expected to be an uneventful match.
By the second half, the USA women's soccer team play against Brazil had Erica at the edge of her seat. After that lame referee call on the penalty kick that negated Solo's amazing save, she was filled with righteous indignation. That feeling only swelled further to unbearable levels after the Brazilian team pulled one of those underhanded fake injury theatrics close to the end of extra time. The culprit's name was Erika no less, which certainly rubbed even more salt in the wound. The surreal scene with crocodile tears and momentary fake weakness followed by instantaneous cheerful transformation on the sidelines made her grind her teeth with visions of that two-faced Izzie seared in her mind.
Seeing the headbanded warrior Abby Wambach tie the game with only seconds left reminded Erica of all the uphill battles she had to face on her own playing field. It brought back struggles in surgical residency, unethical practices in Seattle Grace, and just generally fighting everyday for respect as a woman in a man's world of heart surgeons. Her own heart jumped with joy when Solo made another amazing save and then Krieger sealed the victory with her penalty shot.
Erica decided to go shopping for a headband to have the proper attire on Wednesday when she plans to make her first visit to a lively local sports bar for the FIFA semifinals.
