"You lost it again?" She asks smiling while she rolls her eyes at me.
"Hey don’t you roll those baby blues at me!" I reply putting my hands on my hips. "It wasn’t my fault."
"Oh really." still smiling she crosses her arms and waits for my answer.
"No it’s not. I swear that phone has legs and takes off when I am not looking."
Shaking her head she moves towards me backing me up against the night stand. Her lips press against mine as she reaches around me and grabs her phone off the night stand. When she pulls away I let myself follow her until the last possible second when our kiss breaks as she straightens up.
"Whatever you say love."
I smile as I patiently wait for her to dial my number and take off like a mad woman when I hear my phone. I vault across our bed following the muffled sound of Erica’s ring tone. I move along the wall confused at were it could be, when I come across the hamper and realize that it is quit literally singing to me. I flip open the lid and pull the jeans I wore the night before off the top of the pile. When I dip my hand into my right pocket my hand feels the smoothness of my phone. Erica is behind me laughing so I quickly pull my phone out of my jeans and toss the pants back into the hamper. When I turn around she has a cocky grin on her face.
"Really got away from you there didn’t it."
I stick my tongue at her as she leaves the room still laughing. I turn my attention back to my phone a smile instantly spreads across my face. Illuminated by the light of my phone is a picture of Erica and me. We are both leaning into each other our lips inches apart. My eyes are closed in anticipation and we both have smiles. The picture is over a year old and even though I have hundreds more pictures of us this is the one that matters the most. It was taken three months after that awful night in the parking lot when she walked away and I chased her like a bat out of hell. My heart was gripped with fear at the thought of losing her. For a month I begged, pleaded, groveled and we both cried until she gained enough trust in me to believe me when I said I would not be careless with her heart again. The next two months we carefully rebuilt what I had so carelessly dismantled. The night the picture was taken I remember having to convince her to spend a night on the town with Cristina, Owen, Mark and Lexie. It was an electrifying accomplishment when I finally got her to agree. Looking back I am glad I did. One because that was the night my favorite picture was taken and two because that was the night she told me she loved me.
My phone vibrates against the coffee table in front of us. I look at it but I don’t make a move to reach for it. At the current moment Erica and I are on the couch and I am comfortably snuggled in her arms with no desire to move.
"You aren’t going to get that?"
"Nope" I sigh in contentment when I feel her hand start to run through my hair. "It can wait."
Two hours later we peel ourselves off the couch and I reach for my phone. I view the text message, when I finish reading I subconsciously bite my bottom lip as I watch Erica go about putting the DVD we were watching back.
"You feel like going out on Thursday?" I ask as nonchalantly as I can hoping I can pull this off.
"Yeah sure. Where do you want to go?" Her back is still to me as she fiddles with the DVD player.
"I don’t know." I shrug "We can go eat somewhere and then see were we want to go from there." She turns around with a smile on her face which naturally makes me smile.
"We can do that."
"Great the six of us will have fun I’m sure."
I am about five stairs up the staircase when I hear her call my name. I should have known better than to think I could slip that in and get away with it. I slowly make my way back down the stairs and into the living room. My head is slightly down and I am looking at her through my lashes.
"Oh you are such a little minx." Her attempt at stern anger is not working because I can see a slight smile and a twinkle in her eye.
"When you say the SIX of us who exactly does this six include?"
"Well you and I obviously and Owen, Lexie, Cristina and Mark." I hear her groan and wait anxiously for her response.
"Like a group date?" I don’t answer because I am pretty sure she is talking to herself. "I am guessing you really want to go considering you brought it up." She looks at me and I nod my head vigorilouly and stick out my bottom lip for added affect.
"Alright we can go." I fly forward and she catches me in her arms.
"Thank you" I whisper. I dip my head and let our lips meet. She pulls me closer and I moan in appreciation. After a few minutes she pulls away breathless.
"Let’s go to bed."
I nod my head and gasp when I feel her lift me off the floor and wrap my legs around her waist as takes us to our bedroom.
Three days later Erica and I find ourselves in a Seattle park with our little group. The moon is bright and the starts almost seem to shine a little brighter. I lean into Erica as we walk and let my head fall onto her shoulder. I smile when I feel her lean and kiss the top of my head. As we walk I see the outline of something familiar and the closer we get the more excited I get. When we finally reach the playground I see five pairs of eyes shift around looking for the person who will admit that they want to play so it’s okay for everyone else. I shrug my shoulders and accept that they all know it’s going to be me.
"Shoty on the swings."
I see Cristina scowl at me as she leads Owen to the slide.
"You would take the best thing Callie." She calls over her shoulder.
I hear Mark’s deep laugh and I glance over at him.
"Don’t tell me you want the swings to?"
"No they are all yours we are going to head over to the pond over there." I nod as they start to walk away.
"Hey wait." I yell
"I’ll be right back okay."
"Okay" I place a quick kiss on Erica’s lips before I walk over to Mark and Lexie.
"Lexie can you do me a favor and hold on to my phone. I have a feeling it my try to escape while I am on the swings and end up in some random leaf pile or bush. I figure if you put it in your purse it has no chance of escaping.\
"Sure" I watch as she takes my phone and zips it safely in her purse.
"Thanks" I head back and smile when I realize that Erica is already on the swings with a big lead. I jump on the other swing and happily play catch up. After a few minutes I get a bright idea in my head.
"You want to see who can jump the farthest?"
"You’re on Torres.’
"On the count of three. One….Two….Three."
We both fly off our swings and neither of us sticks the landing so we land in a heap in the sand. We laugh at each other until our stomachs hurt. When I notice Erica staring at me.
"What?" I ask getting a little worried
"I love you."
I break out into a huge smile as I overfill with joy.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah"
"I love you to."
Erica move towards me with a smile on her face and kisses me in the sand on a playground and it’s the best kiss I have ever had.
The next day Lexie sends me a text message with the picture and a message that says she hopes we are aren’t mad but she couldn’t help but take the picture and she thought we might want it.
I am brought out of my thoughts when I hear Erica calling me from downstairs.
"Coming" I call out. I take one more look at the picture and shove my phone in my pocket. Now that picture is a constant reminder of how lucky I truly am
