When I worked at a bookstore in Chicago, one of the silly little books we sold up by the cash register was
Zen Judaism. I used to love flipping through it when business was slow.
Here's my favorite tidbit from that book, though it may not be letter perfect; sometimes my memory seems to work like a game of telephone.
"Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Forget this, and enlightenment is the least of your worries."
I pull this out when life gets interesting or even just full. It's good to have a full life, but that fullness can be overwhelming, too. And sometimes focusing on the basics, like breathing (of which I have a new and deep appreciation), helps.
