Rites of Spring

Today, my little seedlings arrived in the mail, slightly wilted from travel, but they perked up very happily once I watered them, and after I tucked them into their new and roomy pots, they seem to be getting along fine.

There's something really wonderful about getting outside and getting my hands in the dirt, even if that dirt is really just potting soil. It felt nurturing and creative, it felt and smelled like Spring.

My portable garden is almost complete. I currently have a pot of sweet peas, a variety that grows low enough that they don't need trellising. And now, the new plants have arrived, I have two miniature red bell peppers, a "pesto perpetuo" basil plant, a small "thumbelina leigh"lavender plant, a prostrate rosemary, and an escargot begonia.

I cannot promise you that I didn't choose these plants for their names.

I have one empty pot left, and I think I will fill it up with cheerfully messy pansies and then just concentrate on keeping everything alive.

The moon is full, or very nearly so, and it's not supposed to freeze, so I'm hoping they all make it through the night.
