Hello
Yeah, it's been a while
Not much, how about you
I'm not sure why I called
I guess I really just wanted to talk to you

Glancing down at his phone as it rested upon the side table next to him, Ted bit his lip. Kristen had dozed off next to him, Riggs resting down at his feet; it really was the picture perfect life. Yet there was something missing… someone missing. And that someone was just a phone call away.

Pushing himself off the couch, Ted grabbed his phone and headed outside to his back porch. The warm winds blew across his face, and he looked up to the sky, the moon shining bright as the stars twinkled above him.

He hadn’t removed him from his speed dial, he didn’t think he could ever do that. He pressed the single digit, but paused a bit before hitting the talk button, taking a deep breath when he finally did.

Not even bothering to look at the caller ID, Cody took his phone out onto the hotel balcony and answered, “Hello?”

“Hello,” Ted said, biting his bottom lip as he feared that the man on the other line would hang up on him.

“Ted?”

“Yeah, I know it’s been a while… I really meant to call you sooner,” he said, scratching behind his neck.

“I wasn’t expecting this…” He and Ted used to converse so easily. Now he seemed like he was fishing for something generic to say. “What’s up?”

“Not much, how about you?” Ted replied, having just as much trouble with this conversation as Cody.

“Nothing… So why…?” he trailed off, leaving his question hanging in the air between them.”

“I’m not sure why I called… I guess… I really just wanted to talk to you,” Ted told him. That was the truth. He wanted to talk to him, he wanted them to be able to go back to the days of the easy conversations, when they could flow from one subject to the next, when no one but just the two of them knew what the hell they were talking about. He missed that a lot.

And I was thinkin' maybe later on
We could get together for a while
It's been such a long time
And I really do miss your smile

I'm not talking about movin' in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight

“Well… I’m here,” Cody said after a brief pause.

“Good.” Ted took another breath, one that Cody could hear over the phone, and he worked up his nerves before asking, “Did you maybe want to get together later on? It’s been a long time since we hung out together, ya know?”

“That it has been, Teddy,” he agreed. “That it has been.”

“I know you’re in the area for the show tomorrow,” Ted began, “so… did you want to go do something?” He glanced up at the moon and stars again, that breeze continually blowing. Leaning over his porch railing he sighed, awaiting Cody’s reply, assuming before he even asked that he would say no.

The city lights blocked out a lot of the stars, but Cody glanced up at the moon and managed to see a few stars twinkling over head, the warm breeze feeling wonderful at that time of night. “I… I would like that a lot.”

We could go walkin' through a windy park
Take a drive along the beach
Or stay at home and watch TV
You see it really doesn't matter much to me

I'm not talking about movin' in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight

“You would?” Ted asked, rather surprised.

“Yeah… Yeah, I would. What did you want to do?” he asked, glancing back inside at the lighted room through the sliding glass door, finding Layla resting on her side in their king size bed.

“I don’t know, really. Anything. I just want to… to see you and talk to you,” he said, leaving so many things unspoken. “To touch you and hold you and kiss you and make love to you,” being some of those things.

“We could go to the beach. It’s not that far off,” Cody suggested. He always loved the ocean, and a nice walk along the shore with Ted as they talked about things they never talked about before might do them both some good. Cody knew exactly how far away from here Ted lived and how long it’d take him to get here.

“That would be nice… I’ll stop by your hotel, we can drive along the beach a little first,” he said, a smile on his face. Cody actually said yes. He was still in shock over that; he didn’t think their conversation would have lasted all of ten seconds.

“Ok. I’ll be waiting for you. I’ll see you soon,” he said.

“See you,” Ted repeated before ending the call. He headed inside and shook Kristen gently. “Hey some of the guys are in town, I’m going to meet up with them now,” he told her, giving her a peck on the forehead before he grabbed his keys and wallet and was out the door.

With the click of the door, Kristen’s eyes filled up with tears that she tried her damndest to fight back. She wasn’t dumb. The guys may have been in town, but she knew for a fact that there ones only one guy that Ted would go out to see. She thought he was out of their lives, was done coming between them, but she knew now that he never would be. Cody would always be a part of Ted.

Cody waiting a few moments on the balcony, phone in hand, before he, too, went inside. “Lay?” he called quietly. “Lay?” he repeated.

“Hmm?” she asked, eyelids fluttering open to look at Cody.

“I’m gonna go out for a bit… meeting up with some of the guys,” he said. “See you later.” With that, he grabbed his room key and wallet and headed out of the room to make his way downstairs. He didn’t bother giving her a kiss.

She already knew who he was going to go see. It wasn’t some of the guys, Cody never went out with a group of guys. It was one guy. Ever since she started with Cody, she couldn’t help but wonder when the time would come when he could go see him again.

I won't ask for promises
So you don't have to lie
We've both played that game before
Say I love you then say goodbye

I'm not talking about movin' in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowin' the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight

It didn’t take long for Ted to reach Cody’s hotel to find him waiting outside by the sliding front doors for him. Opening the passenger door, Cody stepped in and buckled up, smiling as he looked over to Ted. “Hey,” he greeted.

“Hey,” Ted happily returned. “Long time no see,” he then said. Sure they saw each other at pay-per-views and super shows, but ever since the draft the previous year when they decided that they should try and go their separate ways, things just hadn’t been the same.

“It really has been a long time. I’ve missed you,” Cody confessed not long after Ted pulled out of the parking lot. “There’s no one around I can talk to as easily as I could talk to you. The guys are fine, but they’re not you, Teddy.”

Ted chuckled at that. “Believe me, I know… Randy and John are their usual selves, Bryan and Stephen are great… but no one can re- it’s just not the same without you there.”

The two fell into silence as they drove along the road. Cody looked out his window, watching the moon light reflect off the white caps in the ocean. Whenever he could, Ted glanced to Cody, taking in the sight of that profile that he’d come to adore looking at each and every night they spent in bed together. And in their time apart, he’d longed for that profile to be back beside him. Each morning that he woke up feeling a warm body next to his, he would open his eyes only to be disappointed that it was only Kristen’s face he was seeing first thing.

Finally parking, they both opened their doors and stepped out, the breeze coming directly off of the ocean a bit cooler than the ones they’d felt prior. Their feet sunk into the sand as they walked down to the shore line, the wet sand cold between their toes. “I was happy to see that you called,” Cody said, breaking their silence.

“I’m glad. I… I just couldn’t sit there any more knowing that you were so close to me. I know that I’d see you at some point backstage, but… I didn’t just want to see you backstage.”

“It’s for the best, though, isn’t it?” Cody asked as he found himself getting closer and closer to Ted. “I mean, us not seeing one another all the time.”

“Is it really?” Ted questioned, his elbow bumping with Cody’s. “I… I… The longer I go without being able to see you, the worse it gets.” He paused both his walking and his talking, grabbing Cody’s arm. They stood there, looking at one another as a wave crashed behind them and washed up around their ankles.

“I know, Teddy. I know.”

“I love you, Cody,” Ted whispered.

“I love you, too, Teddy. But you’re with Kristen, and I’m with Layla. We’re not a thing anymore. Whatever we were, we’re just not,” Cody tried to protest, his words scorching a hole through his own heart.

“I know,” Ted said, bowing his head in defeat. “But don’t you think that… that maybe we could be for one more night?”

“Who says that one night won’t turn into one week, or that a week won’t turn into a month, or that a month won’t turn into a year?” Cody asked. He couldn’t deny to himself that he wanted that more than anything, that he wanted to be back with Ted as… as whatever they were before they split.

“No one. I’m not looking for promises, Cody,” he said before bringing his lips to Cody’s, the moon reflecting down upon their bodies, the ocean breeze enveloping them as they kissed. When he drew back, he looked into his former lover’s eyes and whispered, “I just… I just really wanted to see you tonight.”
