Does anyone remember this classic moment from the original Twilight Zone episode 'Time Enough at Last'?

When I originally saw that, I'm not ashamed to say that I wept. Those who've met me know that I need glasses and I like to read, so it wasn't very hard at all for me to put myself into the position of Burgess Meredith's character.
That however is not the mean reason I'm posting this. The main reason I'm posting this is to ask: there's a theory that the man's punishment was valid, because he was a misanthrope (what how?) and so didn't deserve to have all the time he wanted to read his beloved books. So he got what he had coming.
Tell is, is there anyone at all who actually agrees with that assessment?
