Post-Halloween horrors:a quick review

I've recently noticed some magnificent books and films just coming out that I'll have to pick up. Since some of you will probably be interested, I'll let you know about them.

First would be a large book in the current Ballantine Robert E. Howard Library series that collects all of Howard's horror stories. These works are unedited and precisely as REH originally wrote them, and they have some beautiful illustrations that make it feel like a pulp story when you're reading it. It's going for $18, but man oh man is it ever worth it.

Second would be The Watcher Out Of Time And Others, a collection of August Derleth's Lovecraft pastiches. Some people hate his work, but I like it myself, and for $14 it's a fair price. I just hope that Ballantine manages to do collections of Lovecraftian works by writers like Bloch and Kuttner as well.

Third would be the second Marvel Horror collection. This is a real grab-bag of minor Marvel characters from the 70's -- it has N'Kantu the Living Mummy, Gabriel the Devil-Hunter, the Golem, Kalumai the Scarecrow (both of the latter wound up meeting their ends in Marvel Two-in-One, which used to be a clearing house for Marvel charcters who were being disposed of), and one of the greatest Marvel 70's occult/horror characters, Brother Voodoo. Gosh, white guys from New York covering Haitian voudon. What could possibly go wrong? Read this collection and see for yourself!

Last but hardly least is a two for one film from Japan, Rodan and War of the Gargantuas. These are not just the American/international releases, but the original Japnese versions of these films as well. This is the first time either film is being seen as it was originally shown in Japan, so kaiju fans in particular will want to get these.

Best all!
