"Come home, I have an idea to run by you."
I swear those words, coming out of my kid brother's mouth, will never stop the hairs on the back of my neck from standing on in. Tried to convince him to just spit it out and tell me what was up, but he insisted I hear him out in person. Probably means whatever he wants to pitch to me? Is a seriously bad idea and I'd be better off just avoiding home and sending all calls to voice mail.
Yet, I'm waiting at a red light on my way back home. Man. One of these days, I'm going to go with my instincts. If Nicky wants to discuss it in person and he's not willing to come to me? That means he has a back up plan, probably in the form of Irene's puppy eyes, all prepared for when I tell him whatever his idea is, count me out.
Maybe it will be something harmless, like robbing a bank without wearing masks or carrying weapons, but I wouldn't bet my paycheck on it. Hopefully this won't take long. Now that I'm finished with school and have been able to pick up some extra shifts at the club, I've managed to pull myself out of the dating rut that finals put me in.
Veronica said she'd like to grab a drink when she got off her shift tonight. That gives me two hours to listen to whatever Nicky has to say, turn him down, and get the hell out of the house before I'm talked into doing something I'll regret.
