A Dangerous Thing by Josh Lanyon
Josh Lanyon is apparently taking part in the Mary Renault lj book group that is doing a chapter at a time of 'The Persian Boy'
I was not surprised to hear that his participation is intelligent and funny and friendly. His books are like that and I am happily pleased by his plots, characters, settings, humour, dark touches and the relationship.
This is not heavy or pretentious literature. They are a well-written and absorbing series of mysteries. (He is currently writing his fourth novel.) There are dark touches in the relationship, which add interest and emotion to stories that already contain some surprising and sometimes shocking moments in the unfolding events of a book seller.
Adrien English is not an intense character but is capable of falling in love and of a touch of anxiety. His head is well-screwed on and he is not thrilled to have taken a fancy to a policeman who does not like to admit he is gay.
Don't miss Adrien's match-making mother - she approves the policeman, though that is in the third book.
Adrien navigates his book club (there is a wonderful book club in the novel), his m/m romance, his shop staff and customers and the mysteries that come his way in a way that had me compelled to find out more and enjoying the journey.
The third book is a lot darker. This second one has an interesting background of the deep countryside of the US of A. (a background that always pleases me...) There are some mystic possibilities of what is happening.
There is some violence, for these are murder mysteries.
I am really looking forward to the fourth book. By the way, his first book is available on-line for free, or was when I tried to buy it and found it out of print. Josh has posted it free on-line. Any search for josh lanyon adrien english will yield his website home-page. The books are not too long, unlike so much fantasy and thrillers of recent years :| This one is 216 pages long in generous print spacing.
