You know what the really tragic thing is? God answered his prayer. The last thing he ever saw was an act of the Holy Spirit--that security guard, in a split second, putting herself in the line of fire to protect hundreds of God's children from certain death. Undeserving sinners, maybe--if there is any truth to Murray's claims of emotional and sexual abuse--but worthy of being saved. In one bold act of reckless self-sacrifice, in those few thoughtless seconds, security guard Jeanne Assam showed Murray the true meaning of the Passion.

She didn't even shoot to kill. (Peter, chopping off the slave's ear?) Murray finished himself off. It is telling, I think, that he chose to go in such a way. Didn't keep shooting, for the sake of taking down one or two more victims in his delusional blaze of glory. Didn't shoot her. No, he chose to end himself. Perhaps it was because he was selfish; perhaps it was because he realized he had failed and by instinct he would rather end it himself than allow the community to triumph over him one last time. Perhaps he went in there not to destroy other people but to end himself. Or perhaps he did it to test God--the God he felt had betrayed him would never intervene in a massacre--and when God intervened, with a bullet, he had his answer...

God has a sick sense of humor, doesn't He?

Live by the sword, die by the sword.
