On the contrary, postwar Italy was the perfect time for nihilism. They had been stirred up with delusions of neo-Roman grandeur and were instead bombed to ruins.

This is more like, oh, I'm falling off a cliff. I should probably find something to grab.

Or, Italy in 1948 had nothing. Post-war, they were optimistic: there could be change, real revolution, something new. By 1948 they had nothing, the optimism was dead, and the economy even more so. Now, we falling off a cliff, the world is changing as we speak, why would nihilism be more or less out of place now?
