easy to learn, hard to master

Oft said. Quite true. Case in point: It's been nineteen days since I've started and I've already picked up about four of the songs on my Winamp playlist. For some of them I didn't even need tabs. Been improvising some stuff too! Those nine basic chords are really handy, and I'm having a lot of fun modifying them to suit my purposes. Nevertheless, I still cannot play an F major chord to save my life. Or, for that matter, anything even remotely complicated.

And yet, it's amazing how much fun you can have with nine chords, four songs, and a little wooden box. I must have practiced for something like two or three hours straight yesterday--totally lost track of time. Wasn't quite up for that kind of marathon session tonight, but there's something intimately satisfying about playing simple three-chord folk music late at night with the lights down and the windows open.

Just wait until I get to barre chords and fingerpicking and hammer-ons and pull-offs and trills and slides...ooh, I'm excited. I know I'm going to be frustrated because things are not going to be quite so easy from this point on, but that just makes me all the more eager to get there.

I am an excellent steel horse, headed for home. I'm gonna cross that line. *strum, strum strummy strum strum*
