In WinXP:

  • Save all your work.
  • Open a command shell and type "shutdown -s" without the quotes.

    In Linux/OS X:

  • Same as above, except just type "shutdown".

    You have thirty seconds to figure out how to stop the countdown. (Hint: Ctrl-Alt-Del will not save you.) Good luck. :]

    CS majors need not apply--the answer will come too easily for you.

    And no, you can't ssh into one of the Windows PCs in Mudd or the CS lab and do this--you would need root access. (Otherwise, there would be nothing to stop you from running a script that does this on every computer in Mudd the week before finals. This is for your own good--you'd be lucky to have your eyeballs after the resulting lynch mob was done with you.)
