picspammy's 17th challenge! This time it's my top five favourite scenes from Inglourious Basterds. It was my favourite film of 2009 and I can never get enough of it. One of the things that made it such an incredible film for me was the fact that no matter how many times I watch it, I always find at least one more reason to love it. Of course the fantastic scenes have a big part in that. While I love just about every scene in this film, these five definitely stood out to me.
5. "I don't speak Italian."
Col. Landa: One more time, but let me really hear the music in it.
This is one of my favourite scenes mainly for the comedic aspect. To watch Hans work his brilliance again in having them repeat their last names, knowing full well they're not Italian, is just a great scene. However, what makes it even more one of my favourite scenes is Donny and Omar. I love watching them walk into the theatre and try and take their seats. Donny's reaction when he sees Hitler is one of my favourite shots in this whole movie. And then he runs back to get Omar who falls on a few Germans. Yes, I love this scene. The music only helps in making it so amazing.
4. "That's a bingo!"
Utivich: The Germans nickname for me is, The Little Man?
Col. Landa: In fact, I want all the members of "Operation Kino" to receive the congregational medal of honor. Full citizenship for myself - but that goes without saying. And I would like the United States of America to purchase property for me on Nantuckett island, as a reward for all the countless lives I've saved by bringing the tyranny of the National Socialist party to a swifter then imanged end. Do you have all that, sir?
I love this scenes for many reasons. First, Utivich! ♥ I love that Basterd so much. Next, Aldo's scepticism throughout the entire thing is great and his expression when Hans is talking to the American official and basically being brilliantly awesome in a totally annoying way to Aldo. And again, it shows Hans' sheer awesomeness. This is that scene where he shows that he's been working for himself this whole time and doesn't care who he betrays or aligns with as long as he gets what's best for himself in the end. Plus, that's a bingo. ONE OF THE BEST LINES OR ONE OF THE BEST LINES?
3. "Damn good stuff, sir."
Lt. Hicox: There's a special rung in hell reserved for people who waste good scotch. And seeing as I might be rapping on the door momentarily...I must say, damn good stuff, sir.
Firstly, MICHAEL FASSBENDER. ♥ Oh, I'd love this scene even if it were awful for only him. He rocked his role and was only in a few scenes. Even more than him, however, this scene is fantastic. I love the game they play and Maximillion and all the drunk Germans. Plus Stiglitz, without doing much, is just as epic as always. I love when the German officer sits with them and it suddenly gets tense and makes you sit on the edge of your seat as you watch.
Stiglitz: Say auf wiedersehen to your balls!
BUT IS ANYTHING BETTER THAN THAT?
2. The Bear Jew
Lt. Aldo: Actually Werner, we're all tickled ya said that. Frankly, watching Donny beat Nazis to death is the closest we ever get to goin' to the movies.
Lt. Aldo: Got a German here wants to die for country. Oblige him.
I love how much they build up the introduction of Donny and I love how much it absolutely pays off. It wasn't one of those sequences where they build it up so much that it only winds up disappointing the audience. Instead, Donny quickly becomes one of the audience's favourite Basterds. I still wish they had shown Donny's backstory like they did for Stiglitz but we can't have everything and his introduction was still completely epic. The banging of the bat on the wall before you see him and I especially love him talking about Teddy Williams as he beats the Nazi. OH, DONNY.
1. A Simple Formality
Col. Landa: Yes, two strudels. One for myself, and one for the mademoiselle. A cup of espresso, with a container of steamed milk, on the side. For the Mademoiselle, a glass of milk.
In my opinion, this film has one of the best casts I've ever seen. I'm absolutely elated it's been winning all the awards for Best Ensemble because it completely deserves it. However, for me, these two were absolutely phenomenal. Christoph Waltz deserves all the awards and I'll forever be sad that Mélanie Laurent isn't being recognized as she should be. These two in this scene make it number one for me. They are both tremendous performers and they work this scene flawlessly. One of my favourite bits right off the bat is the music when Hans first walks up and stands behind Shoshanna. Absolutely brilliant. And then ordering milk and about every other thing he does? Terrifying is a discomforting way but also a way that is eerily charismatic. It's one of my favourite things about Christoph's portrayal of Hans. And the ending of this scene also just makes it better and better with Shoshanna's sobs. It is one of those scenes that isn't exciting in an action sense but it also doesn't let you look away. Therefore, it deserves the spot of number one.
