I.
Starring: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, David Wenham
Directed by: Michael Mann
First things first, this movie is long. It's two hours and twenty-three minutes but it seems much longer. A little less than halfway through the film, I thought we had about twenty minutes left but then I checked the time. :| I would say this is one of the only problems with this film. The beginning starts off slow and then gets more and more interesting, the middle is really rather boring and distracting and not all that interesting, and by the end it gets really good. I would say this movie is willing to sit through but just be warned that it will go slow at some points. I mean, it was slow for me - I can't speak for everyone else but it really had moments of dullness about it at times.
Now, this film clearly belongs to Johnny Depp. However, I was surprisingly enamored by Christian Bale throughout the film. I don't even know if I can pinpoint why! I am a fan of Johnny Depp - I adore the man and most roles he does. I like Christian Bale well enough but I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a fan. But in this film there was something about Bale that I really, really enjoyed which sounds really odd given he seemed at times a rather two-dimensional character.
It's easy to like Depp's character. It's always easier to like the charming mobster rather than the stoic cop. Depp's Dillinger had charms and loyalty and that bad-boy quality that all the girls fall for within the first three minutes. I'll admit it worked on me. Depp's easy on the eyes (tell me about it!) and one of the best actors I know. It's hard not to fall in love with his portrayal of Dillinger. But Bale's character of Melvin Purvis got to me for some reason. Now, I may be insane because
georgeweasleyhp said he did nothing for her.
I admired his stoicism and the fact that he could hold up his own in a film that was clearly meant to be about Depp. There's one scene with him and Marion Cotillard where he carries her and I think that was the defining moment in the film where I was sure that I really liked him. Before it had just been fleeting moments interrupted by the prettiness and talent that is Johnny Depp. Did I like Bale's performance more than Depp's? No, but it surprised me how much I did like it and for that I give him props.
Other actor mentions: DAVID WENHAM. YOU DIED TOO EARLY AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT. D: Can has more Daisy Wenham plz? ♥
BILLY CRUDUP. I didn't even notice him until they mentioned his name in the credits. :| BUT YAY BILLY! He played J. Edgar Hoover, lol. I liked his performance but I wish I had known it was him beforehand, haha.
Marion Cotillard was, as per usual, fabulous. Her chemistry with Depp and the relationship between their characters was one of the best elements of the film, I felt. It was her final scene that really made me fall for Dillinger. This may sound odd but a character can be measured by the way they affect other characters and for me, that's what made me like Dillinger so much. His fierce loyalty, especially. We all know mobsters have that quality but the way Depp portrayed it was brilliant. Then again, Bale's Purvis also had that which I really loved about him too.
Otherwise, I really loved the filming techniques that were used because half the time it felt like a home video which was a really neat element. It really made it seem more realistic. AND OMG THE COSTUMES. ♥ Ohhh, I love 30s attire.
I liked this movie well enough. It did get a bit slow at times but overall I really did enjoy it. At the beginning I was afraid I wouldn't because, for me, it didn't start out amazingly well. But by the end I realized what I had seen. It isn't the best film for either Depp or Bale but it was good and I don't regret seeing it in the least. I loved the realism and the way it depicted the thirties but it wasn't the best film I've seen for either of these two.
Recommend this movie to other people?: Most definitely. It's Johnny Depp and Christian Bale on the big screen together.

Now, as I did with
3:10 to Yuma, I think this is appropriate. However, I won't make it as easy this time.
Poll II.
• NATHAN IS CLAIRE'S FATHER?! OMGWTF. I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. :| I definitely understand the complications of a Peter/Claire relationship now. Aaaahhhhh, still cannot get over it! And I'm not sure I entirely trust Claire's mom with her ability and the fact that she and Claire were supposed to have died in a fire/explosion.
Can I just say right here and now how much I love Nathan? I don't really know why for sure right now but I do. He's become one of my favourites and I can't really pinpoint why (kind of like with Bale) since he's done a lot of things that have made me go WTF on him. But, I dunno, I really, really like Nathan. A lot. Maybe even more than Peter and Isaac and he's getting up there with Sylar and Hiro. BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS GOOD. I DON'T KNOW IF HE'LL DISAPPOINT ME OR BREAK MY HEART OR WHAT. HE'S NATHAN. *flail*
• WHOA, SYLAR. ilubb. BUT WHY DID YOU HAVE TO KILL EDEN? D: She was like the only female I really cared about at this point. D:
BUT OMG LOL AT SYLAR WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT WITH CLAIRE'S MOM. Reminded me of a really demented depiction of Spike and Buffy's mom, haha.
• OMG CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON AND GEORGE TAKEI. I knew they were both in this series but ommggg FOAMING AT THE MOUTH HERE. So, so epic. I really love Peter and Claude's relationship/friendship/mentorship at this point. And yay for Hiro standing up to his dad! ♥
• I don't think I'm as averse to HRG as I originally thought I was. But then again, I'm a sucker for father/daughter storylines. That could be why.
I got the next two discs today and that'll be all I can watch before I leave tomorrow night. Which means I'll just have the S1 finale to watch when I get home, lol. Unless I don't finish the discs by tomorrow. We'll see. I'M REALLY LOVING THIS SHOW.
