"I like this ship! It's exciting!"

I JUST BOUGHT ANOTHER TICKET TO SEE STAR TREK ON WEDNESDAY. MY THIRD TIME. See, I have this strategy to say yes to any friend who wants to go see it with me until I go broke. So georgeweasleyhp asked me to go on Wednesday and as she's my best friend and this is currently my favourite film, I couldn't possibly say no, could I? Beside, who would say no to this film?

I also got tickets for Angels & Demons on Friday AND YOU ALL KNOW HOW EXCITED I AM FOR THAT FILM.

BUT ANYWAY, THIS MEANS IT'S TIME FOR A REVIEW WHICH MEANS VIDEOS AND LINKS AND FUN STUFF AND FANGIRLING.

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood
Directed by: J.J. Abrams

First, reasons this movie is epic:

IT TOTALLY BEAT DARK KNIGHT IN BOX OFFICE. (There may be a twist there, but it's true.)

But let me have Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and Leonard Nimoy tell you the real reasons.

So as most of you know, my parents met at a Star Trek convention so this legacy is pretty much in my blood, I feel. Granted, that didn't mean I had to like it. I mean, I've seen episodes from every series and all the movies and I didn't detest it or anything, it just couldn't hold a candle to Star Wars. Which is why I had put my faith in Abrams from the beginning. He was a Star Wars fan, not Star Trek yet it was clear from the get-go the dedication he put into his film so I felt confident that people everywhere, original fans and new fans alike, would be amazed and accepting and impressed by this film. I know I was and even my parents were. There were good murmurings when I left the theatre and you all know that I was on cloud nine when I left.

Abrams did phenomenal things with this franchise. He made it true enough to the original series to keep the original fans happy (I caught most of the shout-outs and loved all of them) and yet also made it modern enough for a new generation to become fans. He fleshed out the characters, made them more human then they ever were, and yet kept them true enough to their original incarnations for everyone to be happy. Abrams made this film flawless but of course, he wasn't the only one to do that.

(AND OF COURSE HE HAD TIME TRAVEL AND ALTERNATE UNIVERSES. OH, JJ.)

Technically speaking, this film was gorgeous. All the CGI guys and set-builders and everyone really have my respect. This film blew my mind, especially in IMAX, visually speaking. I felt like I was part of the action, that I was there on the U.S.S. Kelvin or U.S.S Enterprise or at the Starfleet Academy. It was just amazing. The action was unlike anything I've ever seen before.

The music was beautiful and I loved that there was homage to the original score as well. I already bought the soundtrack so if anyone wants it, I'd be happy to upload it for you all!

THEN THERE'S THE CAST. THIS BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL CAST.

OMG HOW FLAWLESS ARE THEY? THEY ALL MAKE MY HEART STOP OMG. AND THEIR PERFORMANCES WERE PERFECT.

Chris Pine as Kirk? Hilarious. And serious when the film called for it. But poor guy could never win a fight! Bar fight? Saved by Captain Pike. First fight against the Romulans? Saved by Sulu. Fight against Spock? Save by Spock's father. LIKE SERIOUS, KIRK. I THOUGHT YOU HAD MORE IN YOU. But Pine was spectacular. He made Kirk relatable and the arrogance was attractive and he had fantastic chemistry with Quinto, really establishing what would become a solid friendship with Spock.

I also liked that Kirk got his own little introduction to each of the characters. He met Uhura at a bar, prematurely establishing their banter-esque but respect-filled friendship. Bones was his first friend which was shown clearly throughout the film. He met Spock due to the Kobayashi Maru and that was a great introduction to their clashing natures, always fighting with one another. He fought with Sulu and they saved each other's lives. Chekov saved his life. He saved Scotty's life.

There's a lot of life-saving in this film, btw.

But, all-in-all, I liked how they showed the interactions between the characters and explored their first meeting, setting up for intertwining relationships for the sequel (which the team hopes to release in the summer of 2011). And the acting by each of the side characters was spot-on. It was so wonderful to Karl Urban again since it's been since Lord of the Rings which was quite a while ago. Simon Pegg was lovely as ever and his Scotty made me love my favourite character more than ever. Anton Yelchin made Chekov the cutest thing ever. I NEED A MINI ONE FOR MY POCKET RIGHT NOW. John Cho was great as Sulu but I really hope he's fleshed out in the sequel.

And Eric Bana, while not totally mind-blowing, was sexy, if only because of that voice. Yum. I liked that his character was someone you could nearly sympathize with, despite him being the villain. It made for a more interesting dynamic where you sort of hoped that something would happen where he could even get his own happy ending.

Now. Spock and Uhura. Well, I loved both of their performances, especially the former's. As I said, Scotty's my favourite character but Quinto's Spock may just be fighting for that spot right now. I love that the film appealed more to Spock's human side which made his relationship so much more believable.

I think, like every other fan, that I was a bit surprised by Spock and Uhura, but, like most fans (I hope), I embraced it within seconds. The subtext was there from the beginning. Hello, Uhura wanting on Enterprise and Spock not wanting to show 'favoritism'! People were able to connect that scene when it was revealed that Spock and Uhura were in a relationship. I thought this new development flowed effortlessly and made complete sense. Spock isn't fawning over her but it's clear she means a great deal to him. Being half-Vulcan and the logical guy that he is, Quinto did a fantastic job at evoking Spock's feelings for Uhura without outright saying them.

I just think it's perfect and yeah, they're totally my ship now. I loved when he said her first name and Kirk had to do a double-take. PERFECTION RIGHT THERE, FOLKS.

This film was just flawless. I can say nothing bad about this film. Clearly, since I'm seeing it for a third time on Wednesday. But it just worked. I laughed throughout half of it, got caught up in the adventure and the characters, and there was just enough romance to make my hopeless romantic side happy.

PLUS I CRIED. Despite the opening sequence (which was brilliant, btw) getting some tears from me, I TOTALLY CRIED LIKE A BABY WHEN LEONARD NIMOY SHOWED UP. AND YEAH, GUYS, HE WAS AMAZING. I GOT SHIVERS FROM HIS SCENES.

So if you haven't seen this film yet, what are doing sitting at home reading this? GO OUT AND SEE IT.
