HAS THE TIME OF THE ELVES COME TO AN END?

Is it time to pack the robes away, send the muses to Valinor and close the blinds of the Last Homely House? Are the Elves and Lord of the Rings yesterday news? Should I allow Erestor and Glorfindel to retire and start writing Ernie/Bert slash?

Some have noticed a fading interest in LOTR fanfic lately, and that’s a correct observation. The movies are out, so are the DVD’s. All extras have been tracked down. We know what Elves are made of - sugar and spice and gelatin. People move on and find other things to write or read. It’s the natural course of things.

It is very likely that I will wake up one morning to learn that my Elves have left. Maybe I’ll sit down to write a funny little story about the time when Erestor and Glorfindel traveled to Lothlórien and got lost in the woods, and I’ll find that they have packed their gear and sailed for Valinor.

Erestor, always the correct one, will probably leave a small note on his desk, thanking me for the good times and wishing me all the best. Their chamber will be clean, everything will be in its place, but their spirit will be gone, along with "Mirkwood Love Secrets" and pickled frog feet.

And I will stare at my computer and know that I will never write about their adventures again.

I will miss them, because I love them. I love writing about their happiness and their sorrows, their love and their thoughts, because so many of these thoughts, smiles and tears are mine. And the knowledge that I will never get invited for tea in Erestor’s study again or will sit with my notebook in a tree, watching Glorfindel telling Estorel about the Balrog, will hurt.

But that day has not come yet. Even if the audience should leave, the Elves are still here - and as long as they are, I will write about them.

Though writing a story about Alexander the medium-sized, Alexander’s little known cousin, is very tempting. ;-)
