winter solstice and christmas

Dec 24, 2004 01:05

I was in the garden - winterwonderland! you would not think that we have such an oasis of peace right in the middle of a busy part of the town, but it's true. and oddly enough, nobody in this house but me and claudi use the garden. I was feeding the crows (yes, there is a real glorfinkle, though I doubt he has ever heard of tolkien! ;) )

I contemplated this year. it was a good one, and I'm very grateful for it. then I lay out seeds for the birdies. that's my ritual - the great goddess provides me with everything I need, and this is a symbolic return of this gift. that was my solstice. no biggie. no dramatic rituals. any fashion-pagan would have been terribly disappointed. fin spent the day in almost the same fashion. he's very much an outdoor-person (we would never have to fight over the computer!), and on these special days, all he want to do is being left alone, being outside and thinking. it did him good, the restlessness of these last weeks seems to have gone, and I'm happy for him. :-)

I recently read an article on the political correctness of christmas - oops, sorry: the festive season. holidays. whatever. obviously, some people consider it "rude" to wish somebody a "merry christmas" because the one the wishes are addressed to might not be christian.

huh? ok. as you know, I'm a christian-rised wiccan of jewish anchestry. one of my sister converted to islam, one of my brothers is a buddhist. none of us would be offended by "merry christmas", in contrary. you know why? because christmas is not the "festival of buying presents", it is jesus' birthday. hence CHRISTmas. hannukah, christmas, eid, winter solstice etc. are something different, though they all take place in december. so what is the problem?

happy birthday, jesus! if more people would do as you told them, this world would be a better place. and to all my christian friends: merry CHRISTmas! enjoy the days with your family and friends, celebrate and be merry, and should anybody take offense, tell them to bugger off. :-)

SCROOGE AND CHORUS:
Christmas comes but once a year,
So you better cash in,
While the spirit lingers,
It's slipping through your fingers,
Boy! Don't you realize
Christmas can be such a
Monetary joy!

CRATCHET: Well, I guess you fellows will never change.
SCROOGE: Why should we? Christmas has two s's in it, and they're both dollar signs.
CRATCHET: Yeah, but they weren't there to begin with.
SCROOGE: Eh?
CRATCHET: The people keep hoping you'll remember. But you never do.
SCROOGE: Remember what?
CRATCHET: Whose birthday we're celebrating.

(Stan Freberg, "Green Christmas")
