The Most Common Words in My Journal

Dec 16, 2006 14:57

The 100 most commonly words used in this journal. I got the count from ljArchive, counting only words four letters and over, and somewhat arbitrarily have picked out the words I consider meaningful. This is not intended to show how I use the language - i.e. I've removed words I commonly use as a pattern of general communication, but which don't reveal anything meaningful (though that one would be interesting, too). Noting the particular absense of Mom, Dad, and God, I went back and picked out a few choice three-letter words.

The 15 Most Commonly Mentioned People
  1. Dad (1832)
  2. Mom (1752)
  3. John (680)
  4. Daniel (616)
  5. Leslie (444)
  6. Emily (418)
  7. Jenn (283)
  8. Granddaddy (250)
  9. Laura (176)
  10. Bill (174)
  11. Erin (171)
  12. Shanna (159)
  13. Jim (156)
  14. Josh (120)
  15. Gerberding (85)

This list is skewed. John's score is hurt by the fact that I frequently refer to him as "my brother." Emily's is hurt by the fact that I used to invariably call her by her LJ name, and helped by the fact that there's more than one Emily (though the other one wasn't ever mentioned very much). Granddaddy is helped by the fact that there are two of them. Bill is helped by the fact that there are, you know, bills (and this thing is case-insensitive). Erin is helped by the fact that there's more than one Erin, both of whom have been mentioned quite a bit. Dr. Gerberding is hurt by the fact that I usually call him "Dr. G," even to his face. Mary Grace and Annalee are hurt by the fact that Mary Grace's name is two words, indistinguishable from another very common name and an important concept of faith; and that I frequently alternate between calling Annalee "Annalee" and "Anna."

I need to write a more advanced word-count analyzer, that takes into account words like "Dad's," and knows that "go" and "went" and "year" and "years" should be counted together. I'd also like to count phrases and multi-word proper names. There probably are already programs out there than that do much better than I ever could.
