Operation Pet Lift

mipplet and d0minique should appreciate this little bit from NPR's Morning Edition this morning:

Dog-Loving Tycoon Evacuates Louisiana Pets

Morning Edition, September 12, 2005 - "Operation Pet Lift" took off Sunday, flying some 80 dogs lost after the Hurricane from Louisiana to temporary homes in California. Texas oil Tycoon T. Boone Pickens chartered the Continental Airlines flight. Some made the trip in cages, in the cargo hold. But a few very lucky dogs got travel in a sort of animal first class -- roaming the cabins, barking and wagging their tales.

In other news, I found an aerial photo of Uncle Burch's street on NOAA's Hurricane Katrina image site. It doesn't look nearly as bad as I expected. The houses are all still standing, though it's difficult to tell how bad the damage really is. The floodwaters have receded, and it appears that all that's left is a lot of mud in the streets. Maybe there will be something to salvage.
