EreRant #8: Why Erecia Hates the Japs

Feb 23, 2009 23:06

This is a topic I’ve been wanting to talk about for some time. It’s a delicate subject, and so I’m handing it in the way that I feel is best: by being as bluntly honest as I can from the get-go. Go ahead and flame me if you want. Honestly, if I haven’t offended at least one person’s sensibilities with this, I don’t think I did my job.

Naive bastards think that ass-kissing will make japs accept them. It's quite obvious after all this time that ain't happening no matter what.

I'd say working that after spending some time working on JP Button, talking with the Japanese player base, and talking with owners of Japanese community sites, there are players out there that want to work hard to bridge the divide. There are also jerks who are racist and try to exploit any fears about foreigners and their "different-ness ( ... )

"Japan would have never come up with Grand Theft Auto (Rockstar, based in New York City, USA), Guitar Hero (Red Octaine/Activision, California, USA) or Rock Band (Harmonix, Mass, USA)."

Hilarious. You do know that both Guitar Hero and Rock Band are rip-offs of Guitar Freaks, made by Konami, Japan?

One of the major upsides to titling it "Ererant" is that it's a rant and not a research paper and I don't have to defend myself if I don't feel like it. Perhaps I could have picked better examples for the Guitar games. GTA is definately a good one though, I like that.

A small point, but I'm 99% sure that the original GTA game was designed by a company based in England, many moons ago ( ... )

The point is not valid however you look at it, and it is not a matter of opinion. Square Enix do things a certain way, but Capcom games are almost always instantly gratifying. See Street Fighter, Devil May Cry. Nintendo is another great example. Think of SEGA back in their glory days. This is not something to do with Japan itself, just Square Enix.

(I was the anon above) but I do agree in part with your post. I don't like seeing how english speakers suck up to the Japanese. Everyone I know uses Japanese emotes (^^ / ; ;), sets their language for seeking as "JE", uses auto-translate so much that their sentences are barely readable. I've made a point of not doing any of this.

Uh, I'm not sure how using JP style emotes is sucking up. Most of the time people use them simply because they look better, or can be used in conjunction with NA emotes ( :), :D, :x, etc) to display a wider range of emotions. I know many of my JP friends use both NA and JP emotes for the same reasons.

Yeah, there are some people who might go out of their way to suck up to JP players (And believe it or not, vice versa!), but the majority don't view the situation as "them" and "us" anymore, that went out the door for most people well before ToAU.

Tell me, does a westerner smiling actually looks anything like ^^ ?? Nothing like the crescent moon shape that Japanese eyes tend to make. That's why it doesn't make bloody sense! That's why I don't buy "they look better". That's why they haven't caught on anywhere but inside a Japanese game.

I'm not sure where you've been on the internet since. . . well lets see, the earliest I remember seeing them was 1998? Possibly earlier, on forums that had nothing to do with Japanese culture. They've exist in many places outside of FFXI, many of my WoW only friends use them for example.

And if you don't think they look better that is certainly your opinion. Similarly other people like the versatility, cleverness, and/or look of the JP emotes, but that doesn't mean they do it to suck up.
