NaNoWriMo 2009!

Oct 13, 2009 21:32

I first heard of NaNoWriMo last year when everybody seemed to disappear at once from FictionPress. By the time I figured out what the hell had happened it was already too late for me to enroll...well, not too late, but I knew I would never be able to write something in that time-frame because (1) I think it was already into the third week and (2) I was in my final year of university and already drowning in assignments and exams. (I know I procrastinate, but long-term and planned procrastination is a huge jump even for me...)

So now that I'm not occupied with anything else, I figured I'd jump onto the NaNoWriMo wagon and give it a shot. Until two days ago I hadn't even entertained the notion of taking part...and then yesterday I suddenly - and quite impulsively - signed up for an account (add me if you have an account, using username Ravina). I joined thinking I would just check out the rules and decide later whether I would try it out.

A little over 24 hours later (i.e. now), I have a full list of characters (hell, I even have character pictures for every single one of them!), a setting, and a plot I think I'm interested in enough to write all the way to the end.

What's this amazing plot, you ask? It's nothing special in terms of originality...quite the opposite of 'original' actually. It's going to be a high school cliché, starring a quite strong-minded girl who wrecks havoc just because she knows she'll get away with it.

Man, writing that out makes me wince and reconsider.

The thing is, I've had a fantasy story sitting on the back burner for about three weeks now and, although I love my concept for it, it's not something I think is ready to be shot out. I could, of course, outline and tweak it in the next two-and-a-bit weeks (before NaNoWriMo starts), but I'm afraid it's going to end up being too much work. I mean, the closest I've gotten to writing a full-length fantasy was with Armistice - which, in case you're scrambling to know, has been taken off FictionPress and shoved way down on my priority list. (So 'way' down, in fact, that I don't plan on touching it ever again.) But the point is, I don't know if I want to take on the fantasy story since I haven't written any proper piece in that style.

Dang it, now I'm confused. (Damn you blog!)

Is anybody out there totally against me doing the cliché?

EDIT: (November 11, 2009) What's really funny is that I ditched the cliché midway and am now doing the fantasy. *sigh*
