I haven't listened to John and Yoko's Happy Xmas yet this year but here we are, at work...

I'm so tired and spaced out at work tonight. It's quiet. I don't think the phone has rung in hours. It's hard to tell though since I might be on autopilot. I brought two books with me but I can never seem to concentrate on books here.

Zac rented a bunch of dumb movies the other day. The ones I watched with him were District 9 and The Hangover. I thought District 9 was kind of off for much of the movie but somehow I came to care a little bit about it. It was interesting. I'd give it a C.

I expected to give The Hangover one star (hated it) but was surprised to find myself scoring it two stars (disliked it). Zac and Jesse hated it but somehow I found some of it funny even though I knew it was despicable from start to finish. I mean, it really is an ignorant, stupid movie but Mike Tyson is funny and so are mafioso Asian queens. Some of the homophobic content of the movie is really revolting. The characters are disgusting LA people of the sort that make Midwesterners like me cringe at the thought of that smog-encrusted gutter. I can't even remember what I was laughing at but I suspect I've been in the mood for something stupid and mindlessly entertaining after watching all these serious movies lately.

I've taken advantage of a very slow night at work to plumb the depths of my Netflix ratings because I feel like the problem with all these end of the decade film lists is that they're kind of an echo chamber. I was amazed at how many great films I had forgotten about. I keep seeing all these HORRIBLE genre films on all these lists (and the professional critics' are no better than anyone else's!) and it occurs to me that American Gangster was probably better than any other big crime movie of the decade. Better than The Departed, maybe. I can't remember though. I could be wrong because my expectations were awfully low when we went to see that...
This is my ultra expanded list of the best movies of the decade.
