The post I was in the process of making when I stumbled upon the unsettling news about Brittany Murphy was about how I rented Duplicity because it was #8 on The Onion's list of the top movies of 2009. I figured if they liked it and if Julia Roberts is nominated for a Golden Globe for it and if it's by the guy who wrote and directed Michael Clayton then it couldn't be so bad.
And it's not, say, as bad as The International but it's also not very good.
It's just a boring, generic retread.
The Onion's film reviews have gone way downhill.
I came very close to renting The Hangover or Funny People but I came to my senses and decided that if I didn't like 40 Year Old Virgin then there weren't no point in seeing that foolishness.
I like that they included the Tilda Swinton thrill ride Julia on their list though. That was generally a great movie and she gave a great performance in it.
EDIT
And so what if the staff at The Onion feel like Avatar is an explosion of blue cliches: Jesse, Jason, and I all really liked it and that's all that matters because I don't think it's likely that all three of us could be wrong about something. I mean, the probability is just too far-fetched. The Onion on the other hand liked A Single Man and Duplicity.
EDIT 2:
Also, I had said that The Hurt Locker was this year's Benjamin Button but I was mistaken somewhat. It's really more like this year's Man on Wire because they're both generally devoid of any meaning whatsoever but people project all of this meaning onto them that isn't there. Kind of like 25th Hour but worse.
