Finished a couple of books.
Literary Theory A Very Short Introduction by Jonathan Culler
and
The End of Gender: A Psychological Autopsy by Shari L. Thurer
I think I got both of these from
princessofgeeks
The first one kind of made my eyes glaze over at times, but it was mercifully brief, and a good quick overview of things. The second one was much friendlier and quite fascinating. I think I am finally getting a handle on all this queer/sexuality theory stuff. When I first got involved in online fandom it was all news to me, but I'm finally sorting it out, and this book helped a lot.
Also read My Stroke of Insight, which I think
kanata mentioned. It's all about a brain scientist who had a massive stroke. I wouldn't recommend it, simply because the author has a lovely vid online at ted.com. The book doesn't go into much more detail than the vid did, and it lacks her personal charisma.
Also finished Saga of the Swamp Thing: Volume 1. I wanted to read an actual comic book type thing, and this is the one I picked. IDK, just not for me, I guess. I'm too dependent on words, and uncomfortable with these pictures. When I couldn't decipher what was going on, and I looked to the text for more info, I didn't find stuff like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA at all helpful. This may be a medium that requires more exposure to understand, and I just can't be bothered. There are too many other things to read. I'm thinking of trying one of these manga things, but I know nothing about them, and have no idea where to start.
Finished watching Carnivale, ugh, ugh, ugh. The characters were so compelling I couldn't stop watching even though I was grossly offended, needed warnings, and had a horribly correct fear of where it was all going about halfway through. Ugh.
Now I'm watching Highlander, which overall isn't that interesting so far, but I understand the good stuff comes after Methos appears, and I just got to the first ep he is in. I'm watching solely so I can read the fic.
Also watching Jeeves and Wooster, which is delightful. I've been reading some of the books in ebook form, and they are also delightful. Not sure why I have never read Wodehouse. He reminds me a lot of Thurber, who is an old favorite of mine, in that both authors hark back to a time that never really existed, but that's okay: I live for escapism.
I'm still enjoying Fringe, even though evil Olivia is making me uncomfortable. Why is it so easy for writers to fall into that evil woman who uses her sexuality to befuddle and manipulate men trope? Still, they are doing better than most genre shows.
Terriers is making me cringe, but I'm still watching, albeit at times through my fingers.
For some reason I watched Billy the Exterminator the other day. Hahahahaha. It was hilarious. Now I want a Supernatural fusion. After all, Billy is out there with his brother fighting alligators and so on, saving people from horrifying creatures. It's not much of a stretch.
I guess that's about it for now. Oh, except I watched the first ep of Lost Girl, and it seems to have potential.
