wood_spryte, this came from Canada.com and absolutely shocked me with one of the worst anti-Christian arguments I've ever read. Here's what the assclown wrote:
"The bible states that marriage is between a man and a woman in the house of god. Therefore, no atheists should be able to get married. Remember that before you speak about limiting the rights of homosexuals.
Leviticus 18:22 states that homosexuality is an abomination.
However, if you are going to follow this and say that we as a country are going to hell, and that the homosexuals being married are going to hell, please remember:
Leviticus 25:44 states that it is ok to own slaves from a neighbouring nation. However, slavery is banned in Canada. Why are we not going to hell for this already? And why can I not own some Americans?
Exodus 21:7 says that it is acceptable to sell ones daughter into slavery. I don't have a daughter, but can I buy yours?
By stating that Canada is going to hell for allowing same-sex marriages, you're using your own sense of right and wrong, you're own moral criteria to determine which passages of the bible to reject and to accept."
I'd like to chat with this person and have them point out to me where in the Bible it states that atheists aren't allowed to marry. Being an avid reader of the Bible, I'm wondering where they found such an analogy.
The Bible DOES state homosexuality is an abomination. This much is true, but comparing it to slavery is beyond ridiculous. Slavery in Biblical times, especially for Rome and Egypt, was the #1 economical driving force. The slave trade was a gigantic cash cow that both the Pharaoh and Caesar used as the foundation to build amazing wonders and create vast empires. That's what made it acceptable back in those times all the way up to the 19th century: it made a LOT of money.
Now does that make it right? Of course not. But the Bible's only statement about homosexuality is in that one verse, and that's IT. Written in the Old Testament a couple thousand years before Jesus. Homosexuality was not prevelant at all back in those times nor did it make a negative or positive impact on society. So saying slavery should be allowed because same-sex marriage (NOT homosexuality on its own, which is actually accepted by the majority) is rejected is complete and utter nonsense because one actually made a difference, hence it being accepted, while the other didn't and wasn't even paid attention to besides one verse in a gigantic book written over the span of a couple thousand years.
Think about it in terms of today's times. Would China destroy their economy because they kill Jews and Christians? Nope. You could say the same about the Middle East as well, where anyone not following Islam or Hinduism is persecuted, yet we don't criticize them. Different societies mean different values mean different things are accepted. And it certainly didn't help that several gay communities tried to get married without judicial consent. Take Multnomah County here in good ol' Oregon. A city council member decided to let the gay community get married before a judge overruled it. It's not the council member's place to interpret the law; that's what the judicial branch does. Not only did this movement breach the law, it also pissed a lot of people off at the gay community. No wonder we saw all of those laws banning marriage go into effect? Chew on that one for a while instead of blaming it on Christianity.
Let's go back to the Bible. I have an outlook on the Bible that involves taking individual arguments out of it and interpreting them in how modern society would perceive them SEPARATELY. Obviously we aren't going to believe the same things or hold the same values as back then, which is why southern fundies sometimes annoy me, but at a far less level than ignorant atheism because they aren't as vocal. Read the Old Testament sometime and think to yourself, "Gee, how would we see this today?" Then read the New Testament and Jesus' proverbs, and do the same thing. But DON'T compare them. Especially slavery and homosexuality. There is no comparison between an emotional decision and an economic one.
I'm all for non-religious beliefs and homosexuality. You do your thing. But if you don't have a good point to make or you try and overstep your bounds, you're going to get burnt. There is nothing in this world that pisses this Christian off more than belligerent atheism. Believe what you want, do your research and shut the fuck up.
