CHARACTER
NAME: Yoite
AGE: 15/16
GENDER: Neither: It is explained in the manga that Yoite is neither male nor female. While it is not completely explored, to make things medically clear, Yoite is a hermaphrodite, or intersexual. Basically, he has both physical parts of both genders. However, he uses male pronouns and is considered a male for all intents and purposes.

ROLE IN CANON:
Yoite does not have a defined role in the sense of protagonist or antagonist in Nabari; it is better to define him as a catalyst; Yoite's deteriorating health and desperation to have himself wiped off the face of time propels Miharu, the protagonist, to fight on his behalf to either see that his wish be granted, or spare him from death. This hasn't been revealed yet, though it will be soon.

FANDOM: Nabari no Ou
FANDOM MEDIUM: Manga
TIMELINE PERIOD: After the incident in Chapter 34, after he has fallen unconscious.
ABILITIES: Kira; a mysterious art that uses life force to attack others, in exchange for depleting his own health and condemning himself to death. Due to the game, Yoite will not have his Kira; but he will be absolutely positive he does have it and will likely attempt to use it on people with little success.

CHARACTER HISTORY:
Not much is known about Yoite's past; he keeps it veiled very tightly. From all outward appearances, Yoite is a tall, slender boy of sixteen. With somewhat icy, but beautiful features. An emo-child, perhaps, curled up in the corners of rooms or slithered in tight spaces. However, he is not as he appears.

Once upon a time, his name was Sora. He refers to himself as male, but Yoite is neither male nor female. It was determined when he was born that he would be male. As such, his voice is very soft and faint, and his features delicate.

The world is divided; the front world and the world of Nabari, the world of the Ninja villages and the underground. Yoite is a ninja that studies under the Kira technique, a forbidden art that uses one's own lifeforce, or ki, to attack others. He works with the Kairoshu village as their deadly weapon to clear live obstacles. The consequence of using the art is dire. First it aged his body three years, then it robs the user of each of the senses, until finally, their body crumbles altogether. Yoite is already dying, and quickly. The boy who appears a young adult is really a child, with only roughly two months to live.

Any talk of his family leads him to withdraw within himself; he had one brother, though not by blood, named Tsukasa. Though Tsukasa was younger, Yoite was a troubled child and Tsukasa often ended up taking care of him and shepherding him about. Because of his difficulties, he was abused at home, and it left him silent and dispondant. The Kairoshu brought him in, and he was quickly groomed to be a Kira user, though only a child. Tsukasa is the only one who has ever offered affection to him through his childhood, and otherwise, love baffles him, and frightens him, because he finds himself unworthy. Any kind act is painful.

He currently resides with his partner Yukimi, another ninja under the Kairoshu. Yukimi looks after him as his health degenerates and tears apart, and is protective of him. Yoite's one goal before he dies is to find the user of the Shinrabashou, and use them to grant his greatest wish. The Shinrabashou sacred, forbidden art that controls all things in nature and contains the world's wisdom; access to its power can solve any problem or wish; but it is so unwieldly that it oft kills the user. It rests within a young boy named Miharu. Yoite tracks him down, and puts himself in the boy's service on one condition:

That he would erase his existence.

Yoite believes that the world would be a better place if he never existed. In his mind, he is only an annoying death god, someone who ruins lives and destroys joy. As such, he does whatever it takes to give Miharu the tools to learn the Shinrabashou, if only to get himself closer to being erased, before it is too late with his death.

Interestingly, for someone who is so desperate to be erased, Yoite is terrified of being forgotten, though he knows everyone would benefit from not knowing him. He longs to have a good reason to be remembered, to leave some evidence that he had been there, and that he had lived. Yukimi, and Miharu's reassurance has opened him some, because being around young Miharu gives Yoite a chance to protect and defend, someone to fight for, to live for.

But the clock is ticking, and soon Yoite will run out of time...

CHARACTER PERSONALITY:
Yoite is an emo-kid to the core, but unlike most emo-children, Yoite is completely quiet. He doesn't constantly screetch about how horrid the world is or how unfair life is. Yoite thinks himself so beyond hope and beyond worth living, that he doesn't even consider himself alive, or human.

The boy hardly speaks at all, and spends most of his time curled up in hiding places, trying not to get in the way. He is very adverse to physical affection and does NOT like to be touched. He is not lonely, mainly because he doesn't know what it's like to be loved, so he doesn't understand what he's missing. He is viewed as nothing more than a disposable weapon. Those around him only seek to keep him alive long enough to finish his purpose, and then throw him away. He has very little self-worth, and is therefore reckless and careless with himself and doesn't care what happens to his body. This is a great souce of distress for those around him, and he curiously seems to take care of himself around people he cares about.

Interestingly, Yoite DOES have soft spots for people; like Miharu, he has those he believes in and longs to protect, in an attempt to make himself be of worth. While Yoite longs to be erased and wiped out of existence for everyone's benefit, he somehow doesn't want to be forgotten. Some part of him wants to be cherished and remembered; but he can't understand how he can earn someone's love without offering anything in return.

HOW IS THIS CHARACTER APPROPRIATE FOR THIS SETTING:
Yoite is not altogether stable in Canon; and out of my RP cast, he is the one that I feel most matches the setting. He is used to a hospital environment from his illness, and has very low self-worth, and is prone to lapsing into episodes, even in Canon. An asylum environment seems only natural for him.

NOTES ON ILLNESS
Forgive me for disrupting the flow of the application, but I feel before I can continue, that something must be made clear for the rest of the application to make sense. Yoite is physically ill. In Canon, he suffers from the affects of Kira slowly breaking his body down. For the purposes of Edelweiss, he could be a terminally ill patient who is likely undergoing the stress and anxiety of facing death at a very young age. The symptoms resemble advanced tuberculosis, coughing blood, constant raging fevers, and blackening skin, with fatigue so strong that he seems narcoleptic, and is often dropping off to sleep without a moment's hesitation. To make matters worse, the disease is slowly paralyzing his senses; at this point, his sense of taste is gone, and his eyesight and hearing are beginning to fade. His sickness also leaves him perpetually cold, no matter how much he bundles up or wraps himself in blankets. In addition to the effects of being in the asylum, Yoite will also have to deal with accepting a grim prognosis that he likely has very little time left to live. Yoite is treatable so that he won't be consumed by his sickness; he takes a regiment of cardiac pills and other stabilizers, but there isn't any hope for him, barring a miracle.

WHAT WILL THEIR DIAGNOSIS BE:
In addition to his physical ailments (see above), Yoite has Gender-Identity issues that often come with being intersexual; but is mainly manic depressive. Yoite expresses thoughts that he wishes he had never existed, and that he longs to be erased from life completely, for all the things that he's done. He also goes through episodes where he wonders if he is alive at all, or if he's just a machine, no different than a robot obeying orders. Though he doesn't attempt to harm himself initially, since he figures that the disease in his body will take care of that, increased desperation might change that.

PREDICTED PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS:
Depression will obviously be the first thing to settle in on Yoite, closely followed by paranoia and desperation. Yoite will also be going through the five stages of accepting death (see above), and dealing with his impending demise.

PREDICTED BEHAVIOR/PLANS:
He's stricken by loneliness, and out of desperation, might begin to speak to an imagined Miharu, if only to have someone close by, imagined or no. He seems to react well to slow, careful affection as he seems to grow on people. He even warms to them to some degree; In the manga, he begins to smile and even laugh. As his body begins to deteriorate further, he may be inclined to attempt to harm himself or end his life, but that will be some time down the road. For a person slated to die, Yoite has a bizarre fixation on trying to stay alive long enough to ensure that he won't exist. Though he claims that is his dearest wish, he openly confesses to Miharu, who is dear to him, that he doesn't want to die.

Yoite does best with characters that are not overly affectionate and, for lack of a better term, cuddly. He shrinks under strong, authority figures, but when determined, defies them without a blink. The growth that I would hope to have is his own battles with death and accepting himself through watching others and realizing his worth as a person.

DANGER LEVEL:
1. He's mainly a danger to himself more than anyone else, though if provoked, Yoite is a vicious fighter and is prone to lashing out when going through phases of self-frustration and doubt. But for the most part, Yoite is quiet and keeps to himself, curling up and hardly being trouble at all. It would take an authority figure actively pressuring and attempting to force him to do something before he would react violently. Even then, his stamina would be worn quickly.

SAMPLES
THIRD PERSON:
It was not the first time that Yoite had awoken in a hospital. His body screamed in protest at his mind for causing it such physical strain. His warm winter clothes had been replaced with something that amounted to scrubs, thin pajamas that barely warmed his constantly chilled body. His limbs immediately snapped into a curl, thoughts overpowered by shuddering for the time being. He found a mandatory quilt at the foot of the bed and tugged it tightly over himself, bundling inside the fibers until his thoughts could return to him.

Gradually the cold ebbed away enough that he could move in the room. He jumped a little when he placed his feet on the cold floor, but eventually grew numb to the cold. Easing his weight onto his feet, Yoite squinted. Draped over the back of the rustic desk chair was his scarf, neatly folded. In his haste he dropped his quilt to crush the scarf to his shallow chest. It carried Miharu's scent and his touch; something familiar, a shred of his memory. Double-wrapping the scarf around his slender neck, Yoite gathered the quilt again, shuffling slowly to the door to peer out the tiny window.

Where was he now? Another of Hattori's plots? Or was this hell? The compartment around him seemed to say so. But missing were the blazes and smoldering he had been told of in church. Perhaps this was his hell, an icebox for him to suffer in for eternity for what he had done.

He spoke aloud to the room, voice grating from not being used.

FIRST PERSON:
Is anyone out there?
Hello?

[coughs, ragged breaths before speech continues normally]

cold... the light from the window seems to help... it's pretty.

Hattori, is this your doing? Yukimi?
...Miharu?
[coughs dissolve into shuddering]

NOTES:
First character here! Eeeek! I'm so excited!
