Lavi let out a deep breath while he shut his laptop. It was like this was one huge mistake. He shouldn't have told Rinali anything in the first place - just let it drop so she didn't know that anything bad was going to happen. But, it was too late now. He left his room and headed towards Rinali's room. Maybe it was just him, but Lavi felt that he was walking slower than usual. Although, he did make it to Rinali's room after a bit. Pulling himself together, he knocked on her door.
Rinali shut her own laptop and sighed, hanging her head in shame and defeat. Yes, she was angry he didn't tell her about things, but to have this all explode on his birthday made her feel guilty for possibly ruining his day. She sighed deep and stood up, hair down naturally with another sort of frilly black dress on that she was going to wear out to ...sadly see Ataru. After everything Miranda told her she was having horrible HORRIBLE second thoughts on this. When she heard the knock, she was halfway in the process of combing out her long strands pulled over a partly exposed shoulder. "Ah- come in, please." She said loudly.
With Rinali's voice telling him to come in, Lavi opened the door. He almost walked in with his signature grin but decided to drop it into a straight face - it was a fact that she didn't want to see him put on a fake smile. "Hey." His tone wasn't as easy going as usual, and he didn't even bother stepping away from the door after closing it behind him. It was a bit awkward for him - probably for her too.
And awkward it was. She glanced down at the ends of her hair as she continued to brush it, ravenblack fringe covering her eyes that were still somewhat red from the reality of everything. As much as they wished this to be a vacation, sooner or later, they'd have to return to their duties and their lives. Rinali set her brush down and offered the bed to Lavi with an outstretched hand. "Please, have a seat."
He didn't really want to, but Lavi took the offer and plopped down onto the bed. It probably would have been odder if he was just standing at the doorway for the whole time anyways. By the way Rinali was dressed, it looked as if she were going somewhere. "I'll make it quick." He knew exactly where to start.
She gave a just nod to him and took a seat a bit ways away from him on the bed with hands neatly folded on her lap. She stared straight ahead and braced herself. From everything Lavi had cryptically mention and to her own sixth sense playing on her mind, whatever he was about to say was not going to be something she was going to WANT to hear. Her own mind played tricks with her. Was her brother dead? Did they never find Allen? Did one of them die..? What happened to the world. All of those thoughts played and weighed on her mind and her heart and left her in a physically exhausted state. "Very well then.."
Taking one deep breath, Lavi began to speak. "Anita's ship was attacked..or with you, it's going to be attacked." His mouth opened again, but no words came out. This was..a bit harder than he expected. As much as he didn't want to look Rinali in the eyes, the red head turned his head and stared at her. "It's bad."
She froze a bit and turned her head to look up at him with her tired eyes. "But...Miss Anita. Her crew will protect her. And we're there! We'll protect her won't we?" She asked with a bit of hesitation and panic in her voice. Anita was the closest thing to a mother or a sister that she had. And she was oh so in love with the general...it would be so happy to see them reunited again. Or...it would of been.
He could feel a knot twisting in his stomach - the expression on her face hurt him. The panic in her voice made it even worse. "There's a strong akuma." Remembering the disaster was causing his voice to shake a bit. It was hardly noticeable, but he could feel it. "Everyone tried their hardest, but..it's just not enough."
Rinali had her own knot forming in a lump in her throat. Her eyes ached to release the watery buildup that began, but she kept her breathing level. "N-No, there- that can't be right. Miss Anita would just...we were there to help weren't we? A-All of us, we should of been able to do something!"
"We were there, Rinali." Lavi bit his lower lip - he knew this was a mistake now. But why did it matter to him so much? Why were all these emotions running through him? Why the hell did he feel so much inner pain that day? "And we did do something. A lot of people..weren't able to survive though."
Her eyebrows furrowed and she looked down. Suman, Allen...Miss Anita and her gracious crew that helped them. Why did so many people have to suffer for their cause. For stupid Innocence and the stupid Earl... She sighed deep and hung her head, ravenblack hair curtaining over her shoulder. Soft wet spots appeared on the fabric of her dress and quietly the sounds of shaky breaths were heard.
Damn. She was crying and he didn't even finish all of it. "Rinali." Lavi lifted his arm and stretched his hand towards Rinali's face. For a second, he hesitated. But he let his hand rest against the girl's cheek, one of his fingers brushing off her tears. "There's one more thing I need to tell you."
She was a bit hesitant at his touch but soon she released the tension in her shoulders and allowed him to wipe some tears away. She sighed and nodded, her hands pushing her hair back from her face as she sighed with her quivering breath. "I-" she sniffed, trying to find her voice. "-I assumed there was more.."
Lavi smiled - it was weary and shaky, but none the less, a smile. "You saved me. Miranda too. And Crowley and Bookman. Chaoiji.." He voice shook a bit more, the hand on Rinali's cheek falling to her shoulder. "We got to see Allen again because you killed the other Akuma." His smile began to droop into a frown. "I didn't want to tell you this because you got hurt. If you knew, I didn't want you try harder to save everyone." His eye narrowed. "You were you hurt, and the only thing I was able to do was let you know that you were still alive."
Her head shot up when she heard about Allen. They were able to see him..? Really and truly? The hope flooded into her amethyst eyes and she stared at his emerald eye for a long moment. Her eyebrows then furrowed. Hurt? Hurt how...? Her head tilted curiously at that. "Hurt..?" She repeated her thoughts.
She did want to try and save people, but she often knew that time's flow seemed to be a precarious thing. To mess with it would mess up one reality but shift motions into another. At least that what it seemed and the theories of the scientists of their day. But the desire to help was indeed overwhelming...She could almost hear her brother's harsh words telling her to stop."Hurt how..?"
He slightly shook his head as if he didn't want to say. "I thought you were dead." There was no way he'd let Rinali know about what happened to her innocence. All that would lead to is another bundle of horrible stories with the death of close friends. "And that's that." He swallowed and stood up. There was nothing else that he wanted to say and he fully intended on this being the only story from the future that she would be enlightened with.
It was enough, at least. She didn't really know about anything after that because she had no idea how far Lavi really was in their world. She stood up and stepped closer to him and wrapped her arms around his mid section and buried her face sweetly on his chest. "We truly saw Allen again?" She whispered through the small bits of tears. "And you're all safe...yes?"
The sudden embrace was a bit surprising to Lavi. He did, however, return the gesture by wrapping his arms around her thin body. His palm fell against the back of her head and caressed her hair. "Yep. He's safe and so are we." He let his chin rest against the top of her head, a light smile against his lips. "And in my time, we're all still together too."
The sound of still being together made the heartache a little better. So many questions were still left lingering but- so far her heart seemed to deal with what was given to her. Though later that night she'd say a silent Prayer and goodbye to Anita, she still remained hopeful that when she did return, she'd be able to at least see her smile once more. Her arms tightened justly around Lavi and she continued to hug him tight to her. "Please don't fake a smile to me again..." She whispered to his neck.
Lavi lightly rubbed Rinal's back. "I wont, I promise." For him, it would be a hard promise to keep. Not only that, but he was almost sure that he'd break it. Although, the least he could do for the girl is make that promise and attempt to stick to it as much as he could. After a few more seconds of embrace, he loosened the hug and looked down at her. "I should leave now. You have a date, right?" He grinned playfully.
Selfishly taking a moment to enjoy the hug, she pulled justly away as well and glanced up at him when he looked down at her. "A date...Oh.." She frowned and hung her head. "With Ataru...N-No doubt it's not going to end well at all." She sighed. "W-Wait how did you know?"
Shouldn't girls be all giddy and happy when they're going on dates? "Yeah? Why not? At her next comment, he smiled childishly. "Do you even have to ask?"
She would of been more giddy and happy if it wasn't Ataru trying to get into her underpants... She blinked and looked away. "He seems interested in only one thing." Her eyes darted back to him. "And yes, I do have to ask..I'm curious."
Lavi blinked, remembering the perverted frog and how he managed to hit on every girl. The man was worse than him. "I'm not surprised that you feel that way. If it makes you feel any better, I'll kill him if he lays a finger on you." Oh god, he was starting to sound like her brother. "Besides, I think you can take care of yourself." He flashed another smile and leaned to the side. "I'm a Bookman in training. It's my job to know things."
That familiar sense of protectiveness made her cheeks flush slightly and she glanced away. "I told Miranda if he touched me I'd throw him in the ocean.." She mused then glanced back up at him. Bookman in training huh... She wrinkled her nose at that. "You've been spying?"
"I have no objections to that." He looked down at her and chuckled nervously. "I don't spy, I collect information ~ "
"I thought that's what spy's did." She teased with a slight tilt of her head.
"I'm just doing my job ~ I can't let old panda face get mad at me, right?" He took a step back and slightly waved. "I should get going now."
"Yeah.." She stepped back as well and uncircled her arms from his waist. She bit her lip for a moment before she smiled faintly. "I have a boyfriend now..." She confessed and looked away. "I had a crush on you for a while but- when you said you liked Miranda I knew I couldn't compare so- and- Leo's really sweet, so- I hope you two get along." She said then breathed out finally."And thank you..for telling me.."
He knew she went on a date with him, but..they're going out now? "Oh." He wanted to smile, but it wouldn't be real - would he really break a promise that fast? No, he'd just find a loop hole. The edges of his lips tugged into a smile. "I'm glad you're happy with him." He smiled for her because he was happy for her - that was real, at least. "I already met him and I think he'll treat you well." He turned away and opened the door, the urge to say "I had a crush on you too." Or rather, 'have' might be a better word minus the 'too'. "Night."
She glanced towards him and watched him head to the door, nodding that at least she had his approval. She looked down at her bed, fiddling idly with the hem of her skirt. Had was a false lie for her, too. She still did like him...a lot. But with how he was with Miranda, she wouldn't be able to compare.. She resisted the urge to say she still had one on him and just nodded. "Happy Birthday, Lavi.."
