My first KuroFai fic. Gods! The Horror!
Warnings: Spoiler for up to the Chess Arc, somewhat vague. Fluff and angst.
Rating: PG-13 for implying some activities and mild cursing.
Summary: Fai tries to deal with his vampirism, and fails. Kurogane tries to help. Tensions between them run a mile wide and ellipses are abused.
I apologize for mistakes. I'm not in a poof reading mood today.
Comments are like cookies for breakfast. Critique is like coffee. Both are addicting.

Fai was exhausted and his thirst gnawed at his insides, but he didn’t want to quench it. That thirst was a constant reminder. And he wanted to forget it all. The whole debacle that was his life.
How he hated Kurogane for making him into even more of a burden. It was just too much to take in one life…
He heard slow steps at this door. No…He couldn’t face Kurogane right now. This idea of drinking someone’s blood was still to foreign to him. Every time he drank that sweet nectar, that god-forbidden nectar he began to lose control. He hated to enjoy it, but the new part of him reveled in the taste.
Kurogane walked over next to Fai, looking out at the new world. It was a place of organized conflict and chaos, violence and victims. The insurgents against the government. The slave against the master. The fighting led to a dark and humid climate, the skies stained copper from pollution. Kurogane absolutely loathed the new world. It was so uncomfortable and too similar to the turmoil within the group. Mentally, he sighed. Things between him and the cursed magician was more tense than ever. Fai avoided him like the plague and he had to force Fai to keep him from starving himself.
“..You haven’t eaten…” he said, feeling awkward and at a loss for the right words. If such words existed for this situation.
Fai turned to look at Kurogane, though he couldn’t see much. The room was dark from a lack of energy resources in this country and light was a trivial matter.
“It’s not eating…it’s drinking.” He said, bitterly empty.
“Well, are you going to take it? Or should I just let it all drip?” Kurogane asked as he cut a small slash on his wrist.
Fai’s senses stirred a the smell of that bittersweet liquid. Unwittingly, he moved closer to Kurogane. He caught himself abruptly. No.
“You need to drink, or you’ll die…”
Fai stiffened at the words but they were true. The vampire in him was climbing to a frenzy to taste that blood, live and pulsing and so unique, so bitter, so sweet. Fai had realized that he didn’t want to be a coward anymore, and dying now would be cowardly. With a nod, really more to himself, he slowly reached for Kurogane’s wrist and lowered his mouth. Almost immediately, the beast in him died down. It was absurdly wonderful, being this close to him and tasting that blood. He felt shamed though.
“You don’t owe me anything. I brought it upon myself.”
“I know…” he whispered, though he really didn’t know. The feeding done, he reluctantly withdrew.
“ Get some rest. We’ll need to be read for a battle tomorrow.” Kurogane said gruffly and walked out leaving Fai to his thoughts.

Things between them were too tense, too thick and murky. It hasn’t been right since the vampire blood had started to flow inside him. He couldn’t stand it. Fai wished with all his might for the time before where he could call Kurogane, Kuro-rin, Kuro-pon and those other ridiculous names. Where his smiles were a good deflection easily bought or ignored. He wanted to back to their uneasy truth, their constant shallow battles. Every other night they repeated their dance of wills surrounding the vampirism. Fai felt as if they were inching closer and closer to a cliff and one day soon, they’d fall into a catastrophe.
The group was so awkward now, with Syaoran’s clone and sakura acting like strangers. Kurogane and him did not help matters either. What did come out of this was his new found friendship with the princess, Sakura-chan and Kurogane seemed to be fine with “Syaoran”. Poor Mokona really suffers the most, trying to be the connecting piece between four lost souls.
Someone knocked on the door and Fai tensed, but oddly anticipatory.
“Fai-san?”
Something in him shriveled a little at Sakura’s voice. Mentally, he scolded himself. Why did he think that was Kurogane? Why would he want it to be Kurogane?
“Come in Sakura-chan.” he answered.
The door opened slowly and Sakura slipped into the dark room.
“ Fai-san, do you have a minute?”
“Of course. “ He smiled mechanically.
“ That’s good.” She said, a little nervous. “ Are you adjusting well to this country?”
“ I suppose so, it’s something new, but not really something to be adjusted to. It wouldn’t become permanent.”
“True, but routine is always welcome.”
“That’s not why Sakura-chan’s here, right?” He asked gently, automatically adding a smile.
“ No.” The princess fidgeted as if guilty.
Fai waited to hear what she would say, though he had a sneaking suspicion that it concerned Kurogane.
“ Fai-san…Why are things so awkward between you and Kurogane now? You guys used to be at least traveling companions, now it’s as if there is a glass wall between you two. I thought that because he saved your life, even at such a great price, that you would’ve become closer. But you guys proved otherwise and I just feel that it shouldn‘t be like that. ” Fai stiffened, slightly taken aback. of course, Sakura would notice it but he didn’t think that she would ask and interfere. Sakura was not an interfering type.
“ Well Sakura-chan, I don’t know. But I think everyone in the group is a little tense and awkward with each other. Won’t you say so?” For some reason, it hurt to acknowledge the wall between Kurogane and him, but Fai didn’t dwell on it.
“I guess so… it’s been so awful lately. I don’t think I can stand it anymore. Sometime, I remember what we were like before, and it makes me unhappy. But I don’t think we can change that very much now. Though I feel that you and Kurogane still have a chance.”
“ It’s all right Sakura-chan, don’t worry too much about it. Things will get better, especially between Kuro-mu and I. Let’s not fret, one day this journey will be over and everyone will have a happily ever after, you know?”
“ Ok,” she nodded. “ Will you be alright then?”
“ I’m fine. There’s nothing to fret about. If anything, I should ask about you.”
“ I’m…I…It’s just so hard to know about Syaoran. I miss him so much Fai. Even though I don’t remember him from before I feel like he’s important. That’s why I’m doing this, because I’ll find him. I want to be the one to bring him back because he’s done so much for me. But the clone of Syaoran…It hurts.” She smiled sadly.
“ I think that Fate won’t bring more trouble for us, we are already too beaten down. But you know what? I bet Fate will bring us sticky buns. Those are so delicious!” He smiled for a moment, almost, but not quite real. Sakura laughed a little and Fai was glad. The two kids haven’t smiled or laughed much after meeting the vampire twins. He felt as if they were in a tragic drama and the five of them were the doomed figures, constantly thwarted and denied from happiness.
“Go to bed Sakura-chan, we have the semi-finals coming up in the tournament tomorrow. The master will need her rest to command her pieces.”
“I know. Thank you Fai-san. Have a good night.”
“Good night.”
Sakura slipped out of the room, and suddenly Fai felt the weight of everything fall upon him. He wanted to scream. Things were going so horribly, and it probably will get worse, knowing his luck.
Once again, the door opened and Fai lifted his head, almost eager. His senses jumped and picked up Kurogane’s scent all too well. Oddly, Kurogane’s scent seemed to have gotten stronger, standing out among many other scents. None quite smelled as tempting, as distinct…as him. That was probably because of Kurogane’s payment for Fai’s life. Still, it was ridiculous the direction his mind was taking, suggesting that vampires had mates and kurogane was his. His. He shook himself and mentally tried to prepare for another awkward and painful meeting, tension and his crazy mind’s new fixation.

Maybe it was just him, but that damn magician was acting even stranger towards him now. It was disconcerting and even harder to deal with, especially when they had to fight every other day. Salt upon an open wound. Really, as if the group needed anymore relationship problems. Kurogane doesn’t remember the last time that they were truly a group, when Sakura and Syaoran acted like the lovesick children they were, or when Fai had a fake smile ready and Mokona was aggravating. He growled. He needed to stop thinking about this, especially the magician, but his mind wouldn’t stop. The man, no not a man a vampire, was so damn infuriating. So cheerful and full of chatter, but ask him a question and he’ll dodge it like magic. Too fast.
On top of this, the magician, vampire, but Kurogane still can’t associate that word with Fai no matter how many times Fai drank his blood. Their “sessions” were so hard to deal with. They were full of tensions so thick and emotions brimmed. Kurogane hated it because it hid behind lies. All lies. He wanted the old Fai back. He wanted Syaoran and Sakura to be like what they were. It was so messed up now. Withholding a sigh, he got up. Fai hadn’t fed in four days and Kurogane could tell it was starting to affect Fai. Kurogane walked slowly to the other’s room. The door was unlocked and opened a crack, as if he had been expected, invited. He really was losing his mind, on the path to insanity. Fai would never welcome him. Not to something like this, especially not at this current time. Knowing the other probably sensed him, because vampires had good instincts, he opened the door rather brusquely. Prepared to do something violent. It really was getting to his brain…Kurogane stopped.
Fai lay upon the bed, pale, too pale and lanky. Kurogane heard no breath coming from the figure and froze. Seized by something foreign, he ran to the bed. “ Yo. Wake up!” He half yelled-, half said, hands gripping onto Fai’s shoulders tightly. The magician was cold. “ Wake up!” He screamed.
Fai stirred and something in Kurogane jumped.
“Kuro-pon? Why are you shaking at me and yelling at me?
Kurogane nearly dropped him in schlock and perhaps relief. Then, his stupidity hit him. How could he be so ridiculous? Vampires didn’t really need to breathe and they were unnaturally pale, not to mention cold. Of course Fai would be sleeping. It was late…
“Kuro-rin?” Fai muttered sleepily.
“ Hn.” Kurogane was at a loss at what to do. Should he just leave/ Yet, Fai was now somewhat awake and they had a fight tomorrow and he hadn’t fed in four days. But Kurogane felt rather embarrassed right now.
“Kuro-rin, were you worried that I was dead?” Fai teased, sleep still hanging upon him.
“ What are you muttering about idiot?”
“ Aw…Kuro-bun was worried. Teehee!”
“ I wasn’t! You just haven’t ate in a while and we have a battle tomorrow. That’s it.”
Fai laughed, a happy sound and Kurogane wanted to blush, but he wouldn’t because warriors did not blush.
“ Shut up! Just eat all right? We can’t afford a weakened member right now.” He yelled, feeling foolish.
“ Sh…You’ll wake Sakura-chan and Syaoran-kun.”
Kurogane grunted and held up his hand to Fai, whom smiled, a real smile and took Kurogane’s hand.
“ You know…you really are a big puppy.”
“ Shut up.”
Fai smiled again and leaned down, biting Kurogane’s hand, cutting through the warm skin so easily. It felt different, somehow, more intimate. A trickle of blood flowed onto his tongue and the beast in him purred. They had been at this feeding routine for near three months now and every time, he still felt exhilarated as he drank. It was comfortable yet still so exotic and he knew that it would never really become a routine. He drank slowly, but stopped all of a sudden, an idea in his head.
Kurogane felt Fai stop after just a minute and looked down at Fai, who met his gaze with an odd look.
“ You-- mmphg!” He said and was cut off by Fai’s hot mouth covering his. Kurogane was baffled, and pushed Fai off a bit slower then one would’ve expected from a ninja.
“ What…was that all about?” he asked, cautiously.
“ What do you mean Kuro-rin? I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Fai’s eye glinted mischievously.
“ You! You just kissed me! Why?!”
“ Well, isn’t it obvious why?” Fai teased.
“Don’t mess with me! You damn magician!” Kurogane growled, feeling very awkward and a bit stupid.
“Kuro-pin, the only person that I mess with is you. Now, let’s resume feeding the hungry vampire eh?” Fai waggled his eyebrow lewdly and Kurogane blanched. He was flummoxed, and a little unsure about what Fai said, staring at Fai. Then his hands pulled Fai towards him, Fai with a little chuckle, and kissed him fully on his lips. It felt wonderful, delicious and right, and Kurogane could now understand why people had relationships with others, even if they were stupid.
“ Damn idiot” he muttered.
Fai grinned and proceeded to gorge himself on Kurogane.
