Today was a day of firsts -

- First day I did nothing at work but talk about football, and football, and more football
- First time I placed my first bets!

After spending the better part of the week figuring out how to place bets, and shade the betting sheets correctly, I took the plunge today!
I made my way through the rain, trudged through the awful muddly patch just behind the gallery, into the little shop that allowed you to place bets.

I decided that....well, I was going to just take a stack of betting sheets (what do you call them anyways?) and go back to the gallery to shade them. There was a line, I was lazy, I hate waiting. I left.

2 hours of agonising over which bets to place, and for Dear Colleague to go through the various kinds of bets that could be placed, I made my way, through the storm...ahaha...to place my first bets.

I settled on -

1) Germ..

Eh, wait.

It's classified.
Not about to disclose what I bet on, or how much. But rest assure, it was pitifully small, and disgustingly trivial.

Well, that's been taken care off. I'm now set to enjoy my World Cup to the fullest! Though Dear Colleague fears that he has created a monster out of me, the unstoppable, uncontrollable, serial gambler....

YEAH right.

Like that's possible. I am quite frankly, the most risk averse person in the world.
I remember my one and only trip to Las Vegas.
Dear Friend and I spent the better part of an hour standing by a roulette table....
trying to figure out how to play it, of course! (What did you think?!?)

When we finally decided to take the plunge and place our bets...a meager...well, so small, I'm embarrassed to say...

They changed the damn dealer.
Our grand plan of figuring out a pattern for the numbers.....

FAILED

(not that we really managed to find a pattern anyways)

Gist of the story, we spent the rest of the night placing what little chips we had on all the safe areas, like those where you had the highest chances of winnings and the lowest odds. Very silly, considering we had so few chip, and next to us were these rich Indonesians who could easily lose 20 grand in a single hand and not bat an eyelid.

(which brings me to the point - do you know how many people in Indonesia 20 000 USD can feed? That's almost wrong, but well. It's not my money is it? And I spend way too much money on shoes when I ought to be giving it charity, or to the SPCA)

Ah, where was I? I derailed again.

So moral of the story, I am extremely risk averse.

In anycase, now that I have a vested interest in the World Cup, I foresee even more sleepless nights, and even higher emotions. I'm bad enough during the regular season where I get ridiculously worked up for Liverpool matches. My brother hates watching games with me cos he doesn't like me talking to the TV.

Dear Brother - Man, you're such a loser! Why are you screaming and shouting? Please, it's not like the players can hear you. Like Stevie G can hear you go "Go Gerrard!!", "You can do it, Gerrard!" "Run faster, Crouch!", "Don't lose the damn ball!". Please.....

Amanda - BUT it's for me! That's how I (erm) show my support for my team! It's important to vocalise your emotions! At least I'm not bashing my team right? I'm very supportive! I'm very encouraging!

Dear Brother - ....LOSER

But let's face it. Everyone talks to the TV. That's what we've all been reduced to. Which is why I'm going to keep on talking to my TV, AND watch games at home!

post script. when I first starting posting, Liverpool were en route to the Champions League Final (Ah, who can forget Istanbul, May 25th, 2005?), and I always had some football tid-bit. It's deja vu that now that I'm posting again, it's another football competition.
