I do think maybe he's fighting off his own suspicion a bit, just because he needs [an] Olivia in his life right now and is kind of basking in the fact that he has this relationship at all.

...am I the only one that suspects a big part of the destruction Over There was due to Walternate? That his obsession to get his son back and get even with our Walter drove him to experiments that shredded his reality a bit?
Wow. I hadn't even thought of that, but it would make a lot of sense - thematic and otherwise. I think you may be right. After all, just because Walternate is the more composed and calculating of the two doesn't mean he's not still ruled by the emotion and impulse of our Walter. Perhaps this is even one of the reasons our Walter asked Bell to remove certain sections of his brain - because he could see himself "crossing the line" and tearing apart our reality even worse, like his double.
