Ah yes, Best Qualified is Federal lingo - Luke works for TSA, and basically, if you want a promotion in a government agency, you can't just get it from a pat on the back by your boss. You have to apply for the next level up, which requires writing thousands of words of essays to prove your experience, which are reviewed by a third party halfway across the country. :/ It's a really ridiculous system.
But yeah, the moving discussion has been going for awhile - we just haven't gotten serious about it until lately. As much as I love California, I've literally lived here my entire life, and I'm feeling the need for drastic change (as is Luke). Not to mention the cost vs. quality of living here has gone downhill A LOT in recent years. People crack up when we mention we're looking at Colorado, but really! There's so much SPACE there, so much beauty and outdoor activity, a great city life in Denver if you're looking for it, actual seasons, and - here's the key thing - a crapload of government agencies Luke can apply for. So that's where we're aiming for the time being. (Having friends out there helps too.)
I hear you on the TV shows lost in the shuffle! Believe me, I've got a painfully long list too. I'm finally going to start Fringe soon, which will be the first new show I've checked out in a long time (I was kind of scarred once Terminator left the air, haha).
I don't read too many monthly comics, but I now pick up Daredevil along with a couple other titles (including Buffy and Angel) at my local store on a regular basis. For my money, Daredevil is the best ongoing superhero comic being put out right now - I read the trade paperbacks for awhile as they came out, but got too impatient waiting half a year till the next one (it's comparable to waiting for a season of TV to come out on DVD after it airs). He's such a great character and the people writing his book have taken HUGE risks they wouldn't dare take with any other, more popular characters, which always keeps things fresh.
The Shadowland event going on right now is a good example: basically, DD has taken over as leader of the Hand (a worldwide ninja clan, mostly evil, haha) and has constructed a huge prison/temple in his corner of NYC (Hell's Kitchen) to keep criminals in. He's enforcing his own justice - letting his minions kill, etc. In short, he's off his rocker, and nobody's quite sure why. A bunch of street-level heroes (Luke Cage, Elektra, Iron Fist and the like) are trying to infiltrate Shadowland and shake some sense back into him. So it's kind of DD vs. Everyone Else right now.
But if I had to recommend an easy, fun read to someone trying to segue back into comics again, I would definitely say pick up Batman: The Long Halloween. It's one of my favorite graphic novels - it tells a great, complete mystery story cover to cover, with some gorgeous art and nearly every Batman villain showing up to say hello (emphasis on Two-Face and Joker). It would go nicely with Arkham Asylum whenever you pick it up! ;] And no! I haven't seen Under the Red Hood yet but I'm anxious to - it's on my Netflix queue right now. Did you like it?
Oh, and: NGL = not gonna lie, AU = alternate universe... haha sorry, the internet has taught me the bad habit of acronyming everything under the sun.
Ridiculous system or not, good for you guys. I hope it pans out well for you.
Denver! One of three places I currently consider to be a strong candidate if I decide to move wo another state. A friend I grew up with here in southwest MI moved out to California (Alameda to be precise) after graduating from college and stayed there a few years or so before moving to Denver. Also, one of my best friends has family there and they all love it. I've never visited, but it looks absolutely beautiful and I, too, like having seasons. Anyway, best of luck with that and keep us posted.
Ah, I plan on watching Fringe eventually as well.
Interesting. I really like the film adaptation of Daredevil, but never knew anything about the comic otherwise. I went to the Wikipedia page to see if there's any hope for a sequel or anything, and indeed it looks like there is. Only bummer is Marvel wants the rights back in order to make a sequel, which I support, since they've been making good films in my opinion and Stan Lee DID create the character in the first place, but 20th Century Fox apparently wants to keep the film rights for themselves in favor of a reboot with a visionary director like Christopher Nolan. Ugh, I liked the first Daredevil film just fine, but it's too bad there's gotta be all this crap around the future of the series.
This Shadowland storyline sounds fantastic! I'd love to see Daredevil to see some animated film releases in the same vein as the other Marvel & DC comics that are getting the treatment.
Oooh. I checked out that Long Halloween page and it looks great. Thanks for the rec'! And yes, I thoroughly enjoyed Under The Red Hood. It is most certainly a worthy addition to the aformentioned animated film pool.
Ah, no worries. I've become familiar with a lot of internet acronymns, but I still lack awareness of quite a few.
I just finished it! The Long Halloween! And I LOVE it! I can't believe how fast it goes -- sure, I had it for about a month, but I read the whole thing in just a couple sittings, which is unheard of for me. I could see where Dark Knight took from it with the whole "I believe in Harvey Dent" thing and the team of Batman, Dent and Gordon. I was honestly guessing who Holday was until the very end and I never quite had it figured out. I want more!
Thank you again for the recommendation... got any others? :D
