Bits and bobs

Yesterday I stumbled across this absolutely wonderful article that anybody interested in the evolving gaming medium should read, whether or not they own a PS3 and will be geeking out to Uncharted 2 in a couple of months like I will. It's an interview with Amy Hennig and Evan Wells of Naughty Dog (also known as: best PS3 developer evaaaaarr) that ( Read more... )

Didn't Naughty Dog do Earthworm Jim? Oh, no, Crash Bandicoot; that's why the name sounds familiar.

But, shit, Earthworm Jim and its sequel were good shit.

Uncharted 2 sounds really interesting. I only played the demo of Uncharted, and it didn't really seem like anything special. Except that it was kind of hard because there were a lot of fucking guys everywhere and I kept running out of ammo.

Haha! It's funny you say that, because Amy and Evan actually comment on the fact that the demo for the first Uncharted underwhelmed a lot of people - but then those people would finally get a hold of the full game ages later and go "omgomg I love it to pieces". It's part of why they decided against doing a singleplayer demo this time around - there's just no way to condense and convey the appeal of the game and narrative in that format. So multiplayer's all they're giving us right now.

If you're a PS3 owner it is absolutely imperative you play this game! If you are uncharmed by it I will personally refund you! Or something! ;P

I have no gaming system of my own! I just play other people's. I do want a PS3, though, just for MGS4. Except when I get one, I need to get one that's still backwards-compatible! I hear the new ones aren't? WHICH IS STUPID.

Find yourself a used 60GB PS3 (like mine) - that one's got the hardware for PS2s built-in. I've run old Madden games & Okami on it without issue.

Ha! Lady Catherine is so awesome. We actually steamrolled through the final four episodes last night and man, was that good. Really well-cast all around. I appreciated that the characters actually looked like they belonged to that culture/period - there was no overly tan or anorexic beauty queen standing out among them, which seems to happen with more modern adaptations of period dramas.

It's funny you bring up Sense and Sensibility, as that's one we revisit a lot - Emma Thompson is so wonderful, she can do no wrong in my eyes. Oh, and I'm sorry you had to sit through a bad Jane Eyre! BBC actually did a more recent 4-episode series of it in 2006 that I loved (with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens)... much less time commitment, at least, so if you guys ever get around to it, hopefully it makes amends. ;)

Fun stuff. And now Luke has officially ordered me to rent the 2005 P&P movie because his mancrush on Matthew Macfadyen has won out over his distaste for Keira; the adventure continues! :D

I agree; I appreciate the miniseries approach to adapting all these classics (obviously; I can't stop renting them!), because there's no hasty shorthand being developed, and very few compromises with the material; you have all this time to luxuriate in the details of the world and character dynamics. It's hard enough to make a two-hour movie out of any novel, but when you're dealing with books like these? Good luck.

While we're on the subject of BBC miniseries, our very favorite one is North and South (4 eps) - have you seen it? If not, I recommend it highly!
