So. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix actually kicked my trash. I think that's due to two main reasons ( Read more... )

First of all, a VERY happy birthday to you!!

And yes, OotP was good, wasn't it? Did you get to see the IMAX version?

Thanks so much!

No, I haven't gotten the chance to see it on IMAX - though last weekend I went out to eat right next to one, and the line was so big it wound around several stores and restaurants!

Hopefully I'll get to catch it before it leaves. Every film I've seen in that format has been worth the price.

I really enjoyed Gary Oldman as a good character, too. I just recently watched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and was blown away by his innocence and comic timing in that. It's not something he gets to play up much: his range. And I was totally tripping on his also being Gordon throughout the thing. It's probably because of how weary he played Sirius this time around.

Though ::giggles:: I nearly went mad when he transformed back out of dog form and just wrapped himself in a cloak and chatted up Harry while being starkers underneath. Heeeeheheeeheee

(so immature!)

The film as a whole I can take or leave, but I was thrilled to find I'd been validated in my faith in Imelda Staunton as Umbridge. When I'd heard they'd cast her in that role, I just went "YES!" and danced about. She did so much with that role. She made Umbridge every bit as loathsome as Jim Dale managed in the narration of the audiobooks. She is so brilliant.

Oh, she was SO GOOD. My friend kept choking next to me every time she came on screen. Classic stuff. I still picture her in the book as just a bit uglier - but that's not surprising; I picture everyone differently than who's cast.

I've never picked up one of the audiobooks, but have heard a lot about Tim Dale's great voicework. Makes me all curious.

And yeah, I totally saw lots of Gordon in Sirius this outing, too. In fact, watching him just made me jones for The Dark Knight even worse. ('Specially since there was no teaser attached!) Blaaargh! Pls, let it be next year already...

Jim Dale absolutely ruined me for other audiobooks. Because it's clear that he's talented and spirited but also that he respects the work he does and the work that went into what he has to read. Not always the case, and, it was possible that someone else reading the material might not have appreciated it. He does--did--and everyone benefited. He better brings to life the books than any movie. If you can, rent the audiobooks from the library. I wouldn't be into Harry Potter without them, they are so transporting.

I still picture her in the book as just a bit uglier - but that's not surprising; I picture everyone differently than who's cast. Imelda Staunton's primness suits better the character than physical unattractiveness. First, it's less literal in the obvious way, the way that all other bad folk tend to be ugly in Harry Potter. Second, the fact that she represents the problem of the extreme as opposed to the unfortunate (strict adherence to rules to the point of breaking them to enforce them versus simple bad luck of genetics, ( ... )
