Make us disappear

Saw The Illusionist last night - loved it. One of the few recent films I'll probably pick up on DVD. Quiet and beautifully directed, with a great mood, likeable characters, and a wonderfully hateable Rufus Sewell (playing yet another too-smart, accented villain). Minimal spoonfeeding, when it comes to story - the fact that it's all a bit farfetched and underexplained adds to, rather than detracts from, its sense of mystery. The important thematic elements ring true, which is what counts. Edward Norton is perfect - he fits the period and his character with grace. Just a stellar film all around.

I didn't even know this movie existed prior to its release a few weeks back. I guess I've been so bored with what's been coming out of late on the film scene that I kinda... well, stopped paying attention. (That, and I hardly watch TV anymore, so I never catch ads.)

This was definitely worthy of a return to ye ol' theater, though. I have Drew, kestrel_galien, and my f-list to thank for convincing me to give it a look.

Even though I'm all about enjoying a film on its own merits (hate comparisons), I know I'll be interested to see how The Prestige's style and approach to a period-magician piece differs...
