Four years after putting in my butterfly garden, I finally saw two
zebra longwings today (the Florida state butterfly). I don't know why it took so long, because I don't think they are scarce, but perhaps the word-of-proboscis took a while to spread.
In other butterfly news, I was about to trim my milkweeds, when I saw monarchs laying eggs on the leaves, so despite the aphids, I will leave the plants be until the caterpillars are through with them. The gulf fritillaries are back again, now that my passion vine is back in business. I feel quite pleased about my contribution to the local wildlife, and I love seeing all those fluttering wings out my windows.
