Paris from above

Gillian is missing her daddy, who is in Paris this week. We have used Skype to communicate, which is particularly good for kids since they do better when they can see the person on the other end of the line. However, around bedtime she still got upset that rt_hon_rackman wasn't there. She wanted to call him again, but I pointed out that it would be three in the morning for him. Tears ensued.

So I put the address of his hotel into Google Maps, and we got a satellite view of where he is staying. We zoomed out until we could see the whole planet, then zoomed in until we could see the crosswalks on his street. Then I asked for directions to the Eiffel Tower from the hotel and we followed the trail, looking at the structure from above, surrounded by the tops of people's heads as they waited in line or looked over the balcony. Next I looked up the Arc de Triomphe on Wikipidia, and Gillian and I discussed its history and what it symbolized.

By then, she felt more connected to rt_hon_rackman, and much sleepier, so she went to bed. Ah, the soothing relief of knowledge.
