I feel bad for single parents. Raising kids is just so much work. I'm getting a small taste of that this week while rt_hon_rackman is in California. Fortunately, my kids are pretty cooperative most of the time, but tonight they double-teamed me; Gillian was crying about monsters in her room, and Elliot was crying for no reason he could articulate, but I suspect he was hungry. He has grown from 18 to 19 pounds in less than five days.

The optimal situation with kids is to outnumber them. Two to one in favor of the adults is a good balance. When Elliot arrived, I wrote in a letter to rt_hon_rackman, "We don't outnumber them any more, but we still beat them by mass." That is small comfort to me now. I'd like to count Beckett as half an adult, just to make myself feel better, but he's done the smart thing and hidden himself under a chair.
