Kiss My Ass, Economist

I subscribe to The Economist because it's rather more intelligent and detailed than Time and its ilk, and has less of an American slant to it because it's a British publication. I also like how, in the middle of complex and hard-hitting news items, the journalists occasionally indulge in snarky comments, as only the Brits can. However, I don't always agree with what the mag has to say, and today I read something that purely pissed me off. In an article about a world population plateau, the journalist wrote:

"States should not be in the business of pushing people to have babies. If women decide to spend their 20s clubbing rather than child-rearing, and their cash on handbags rather than nappies, that's up to them."

Gee, Economist, thanks for your high opinion of women in their twenties. They couldn't possibly be choosing not to have kids because they are getting an education, pursuing a career, or helping support their families. They couldn't possibly be spending their money on houses or IRAs or, god forbid, food. They certainly aren't thinking about the quality of life they want for their kids and making intelligent decisions about childrearing. Nope. It's all about the clubbing and handbags.

Wankers.
