Wonderland

Lately Gillian has shown some interest in longer books, so today we went to the library and got two she had asked about: The Wizard of Oz and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. She decided that she wanted to start with Alice. I haven't read that book in years, and I'd forgotten how witty and clever it is. Reading classics like Alice and Winnie the Pooh really highlights the dreadful inadequacies of contemporary children's entertainment.

My favorite above-Gillian's-head joke: a mouse, trying to dry off a group of wet animals, starts reciting a passage from the Domesday Book because that's the driest thing it can think of.

I look forward to many more evenings of rich storytelling. Next in the queue, Peter Pan.

books, gillian
