Good Eats in Orlando

In our ongoing effort to find decent places to eat in Orlando, rt_hon_rackman and I stumbled across Five Guys Burgers and Fries tonight. Short review: thumbs up.

To expand on that: it's technically a chain, but not a plastic, cookie cutter chain. It's Zagat rated as an excellent, cheap, greasy burger joint. It made me feel like I was back in Chicago, because the food was good to eat, bad for you, and presented so badly it was like anti-presentation. The fries came in a styrofoam cup. The burgers came in foil, with the type of burger written on a piece of masking tape. The burger looked as though someone had sat on it. But it was indeed refined-flour-white-bun-heart-stopping-greasealicious goodness. All the ingredients were fresh, including the beef. There was a whiteboard stating where the potatoes of the day had come from (some town in Idaho). Gillian had a grilled cheese that was delicious, on bread that was just like nan from an Indian restaurant. Dense but yummy. They give you all the peanuts you can shell, which is great for occupying children. (They also fry the fries in peanut oil. If you have a peanut allergy, don't even open the door to this place.)

We enjoyed the music too, which although too loud, contained many groovable classic rock numbers. The Stones (It's All Over Now), BOC (The Cowbell Song), etc. Just when rt_hon_rackman was thinking about Billy Joel, on he came. Psychic music. They'll make a mint.

So if you are in the mood for cheap greasy eats, peanuts, and classic rock, this is the place for you.
