So much for the Calgary Flames' 2015 Stanley Cup Playoff run; they lost 3-2 in Overtime to the Anaheim Ducks, who were leading the conference 3-1. Frankly, the Ducks have been a vastly superior team, out-shooting the Flames roughly 2:1 every time, and winning 4 out of 5 games as a result.
What is so galling about tonight's loss is that it should not have happened. The Flames were leading at 2-1, and if they had managed to hold that lead they would have returned to Calgary for Game 6. That's not what happened though, because one of the Flames players (I don't recall who) made an idiotic attack against one of the Ducks in the final seconds of the second period. The refs caught it, and Calgary got a Slashing penalty to start off the third period. That power-play allowed the Ducks to score a tying goal within the first minute of the third period, and with no other goals the game went into overtime.
One stupid player having a little temper tantrum and slashing the opposing team just ended the Flames' playoff run. Congratulations, you jerk. This kind of crap is why the Flames haven't won a Stanley Cup since 1989 (though they should have won in 2004, but were robbed by a bad call) - Stupid mistakes resulting in stupid penalties, costing them goals and thus games.
That said, the Ducks outplayed and out-shot the Flames in every game, penalties or no; they deserved to advance, and if they keep playing as well as they have, they deserve to win the cup.
