I finally got my buffing machine set up, and tried to duplicate why I had seen in the YouTube videos about sharpening knives that way. This was also how we sharpened the knives at the three-day hoof-trimming course that I took at Old's College before we moved out here. I don't think I'm doing it properly though, as the knives don't seem to have a proper edge to me. They did, however, make fairly easy work of Bonnie's hind hooves, so maybe I did get it right.
In any case, Bonnie is much happier now that her hind hooves are back to normal. After the trimming I took her out to nibble grass and stretch her legs, and she was happily trotting along as much as the lead rope would allow. I,on the other hand, am quite sore; my hands ache from holding Bonnie's hooves and struggling with the nippers. My feet are sore after spending most of the day in steel-soled boots, and I'm sure something else will be aching by the morning. At least Bonnie's hooves were relatively clean and dry, so I didn't get that awful hoof-trimming stink on me this time.
All of the horses are shedding like crazy, and Bonnie is no exception. After trimming her hooves and giving her lots of skritching, I was covered in horse hair and dust. That, thankfully, was taken care of by a well-earned hot shower. :)
