We've been so busy since the last entry that I've once again fallen behind in updating my journal. Not for a lack of material or desire to do so, but simply a lack of time. I plan to use LJ's ability to change the time and date to enter some backlogs before they slip from my memory completely. In the meantime, today's events were rather significant, so I wanted to make sure that I jotted them down, even if that means using the iPad app instead of a regular computer.
The day started (more or less) at 6:30am, which is a terrible time to have to wake up on a Sunday! There was much to do however: get showered, have breakfast, get The Kidling up and make sure he does the same. Just about as bad as having to get ready for school, which is actually pretty much what we were doing. After several missed opportunities, The Kidling and I are taking the Firearms Safety Training course, and it started this morning at 9am. Today's class ran until 3pm, and for the rest of the week it will run from 6pm to 9pm, with the exam on Friday. This is not a course for a Firearm license, this is a safety course that you have to have to be allowed to get a hunting permit if you're planning to hunt with a firearm. It's not a hunting course though, it deals strictly with firearms and their safe use and handling. Even if one never intends to hunt, this course should be taken just to learn proper firearm safety. The actual firearm permit is another exam that can be written later. I'll be doing that as soon as I can after this course.
Once today's class was over, we headed back to the farm where I wanted to get outdoor jobs done before it rained. The sky was dark and threatening all evening, but as of now, it still hasn't actually rained (today.) I managed to get the grass trimmed, and then tackled cleaning Bonnie's paddock again. I've been working on it for a while now, but I can only work for a short time in the mornings when it's cool; trying to shovel wheel-barrow loads of stinking manure in the heat of a Summer's day is not fun! Today however, being cloudy and cool, was an ideal day to make significant progress. I'm about 80% done now, but my arms are aching badly from lifting those heavy pitchfork loads and then hauling the heaping wheelbarrow to the pit. Actually, it's no longer a pit - there's enough in it now that it's starting to become a pile instead. Either way, I've lost count of how many loads I've hauled over there, but it's a lot, and that doesn't even begin to deal with the boys' paddock yet!
While we were doing that,
trixstir was picking corn from the garden. This was our first year (finally!) to have a vegetable garden, and it didn't do as well as we had hoped, but the corn grew quite well. We got close to 40 cobs today, and there are still plenty more out there. We blanched most of them and put them in the freezer to enjoy later, but we had a few right away. ;)
I should mention that breakfast this morning was a toasted tomato sandwich, made with homemade bread, and a thick-sliced Beefsteak tomato from the garden. The only way it could have been any more awesome would have been if I had used homemade butter (from our own cow) and homemade mayo. But alas, we have no cow (yet) and no chickens (also yet), so there are some limits on the current levels of Awesomeness that home-grown foods can reach. Still, it was as awesome as it could be for now. ;)
I'm still kicking myself (and likely always will) for not buying that milking machine when I had the chance. Ah well, hopefully someday (soon?) another opportunity will present itself.
